Savannah Council Garners National Recognitions

trophyThe Savannah Council has earned a 2010 Outstanding Council Award.  This award goes to only the very top councils in all of the Navy League.  It is great recognition of the leadership of Tom Latham - President of our council in 2010, and the work of so many of our council members during the past year.  Key components leading to this award are the many recognition awards our council presents to Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard units in our area.  Other factors are events we organize, like the Sand Gnats picnic / ballgame for Coast Guard units, our participation in Change of Command events, and our strong, continuing support of our local Sea Cadets unit.  All of our membership should celebrate this very positive recognition of our Savannah Council.  Thanks to all who made this possible.

In early August, we also learned that our newsletter, the Savannah Steamer, received 3rd place in this year's Donald M. Mackie Award competition for Best Medium Council Newsletter.

Both awards will be presented at the Hall of Fame and Honors Luncheon on Thursday, October 27, 2011 during the NLUS National Convention in Chattanooga, TN.

September is Sea Cadets Month!

Sea Cadet group photoOur own Savannah Squadron of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps continues to flourish thanks in large part to the active support of the Savannah Council of the Navy League and that of our gracious host command, USCG Air Station Savannah. Over Summer Break, our local cadets attended trainings both at Groveland, Florida and at NAS-JAX. Cadets successfully completed courses as diverse as Advanced Orientation, Religious Specialist, and Medical.   All of our cadets who trained this Summer went on scholarships provided by the Kim Komando Show or by the Savannah Council.

This month, Savannah Squadron and the Savannah Council will mark National Sea Cadet month by welcoming the entire unit to the September NL dinner and by awarding the Teddy Roosevelt medal to the Cadet of the Year. Cadets will also benefit from the outstanding training opportunities offered by our local Coast Guard Auxiliary. Our council and unit will also welcome our new unit Commanding Officer, ENS Michelle Sparks, who has graciously and enthusiastically stepped up to provide fresh leadership and energy to our unit.

WTOC-TV Also, please set your video recorders and make plans to watch as our cadets appear on WTOC-TV's "Mid Morning Live" program at 10am on Thursday, October 6th.

Local Coast Guard Aviators

Assist in Hurricane Relief

Irene Response Savannah Guardians played a big role in the recent efforts to help those affected by Hurricane Irene.  Air Station Savannah deployed eight helicopters to eastern North Carolina in advance of the storm's march up the east coast.  CDR Dave Cooper, Air Station Savannah's Operations Officer, served as "Air Boss," managing the helos and 55 personnel from around the country.

Says Cooper, "During the five days we were deployed, all we had to do was ask and some of the great and dedicated CG folks would help us get it done.  While we didn't come across anyone in distress - We were Ready!  We assessed damage beginning around Charleston, SC and worked our way up the coast, as soon as it was safe to fly, all the way to Kitty Hawk, NC.  I believe we were the first helicopters to fly post hurricane."

Coast Guard to the Rescue at August Dinner Meeting

CDR TobiaszA big thanks to CDR Tim Tobiasz, CO of Coast Guard Air Station Savannah, who immediately agreed to be the speaker for our August 23rd dinner meeting when our scheduled speakers had to back out at the last minute.  CDR Tobiasz gave a fascinating presentation about his efforts leading the helicopter rescue efforts during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005.  It was fitting that we had a Coast Guard speaker, as we also cut a Coast Guard birthday cake for dessert.

Coast Guard Birthday CakeOur scheduled speakers, the Blue Crew leadership from USS Alaska (SSBN 732) were forced to cancel their visit when sub group commanders ordered the sub to stay in port awaiting possible orders to divert around approaching Hurricane Irene.  We hope to bring them back to one of our meetings sometime early next year, at the first opportunity.

Our meeting took place at the Pirate's House on East Broad Street downtown, a new location we're trying out because the Hunter Club, our usual dinner spot, is closed for renovations.  Thanks much to the Pirate's House crew for an awesome meal and great service all around!  Click here to see more photos from the meeting.

Coast Guard Night at the Sand Gnats

Coast Guard Sand Gnats

Our annual Coast Guard night out at the ballpark on August 17th was a huge success, with 248 Coast Guard members and their families attending.

MSTC Mark Henricksen of Marine Safety Unit Savannah threw out the first pitch, and the crowd at Grayson Stadium thrilled to a fly-by from one of the helos from Air Station Savannah.  Thanks to the Sand Gnats and Georgia Ports Authority for helping the Savannah Council make this special evening possible.

Volunteers Needed to Select New Council Leadership

September starts the countdown for the selection of new board members for Savannah Council for the year of 2012.  Our election will be conducted at the November monthly meeting.  There are at least four openings on the board for next year.  If you are interested in helping our council select nominees for the board, this is your chance!  We need two volunteers from our general membership to assist in this task; there will be a total of five members on the committee.  This is a short-term task, as all nominations must be complete by October 15.  Anyone interested in helping select nominees for the board should email Bob Gephart by September 21.

NOTE: Nominating Committee members are eligible to be nominated to the Board of Directors.

Injured Guardian Needs Our Help

Members of our local sea services are teaming up to help MK2 Sean Bretz, a 23-year-old, Jacksonville, Florida-based Coast Guardsman who suffered a brain aneurysm recently.  We feel a special connection to Sean because his family lives on Wilmington Island, outside Savannah.

An effort is underway to help rebuild the Bretz's home to make it more accessible during Sean's recovery.  MC Eric Evans at the USGC Air Station in Savannah is coordinating all of the  labor and materials for the project.  Savannah Navy Leaguer Joe Tillman is in charge of raising the $5-6,000 the project will require.  The Bretz family has set a trust fund in Sean's name at Wells Fargo. If you wish to  donate, you can do it through Well Fargo, or Contact Joe Tillman (ctsincsav@comcast.net). If you have materials you would like to donate, call MC Eric Evans ( eric.w.evans@uscg.mil). Noel Bretz sends out regular information on Sean, if you would like to be added to the list, contact Joe Tillman.

Sammy B Fundraiser a Success

FFG 58Thanks to all Savannah Council members who came out to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse downtown on August 25th for the "No Higher Honor" silent auction and "lounge takeover."  The fundraiser helped raise $2,000 to offset the production cost of Michael Jordan's upcoming local TV series on USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58), one of our council's two adopted ships, and its current 6-month deployment to Africa.
