Dear Colleague,

We have a great deal of progress to report this month.

Five member academies selected to hold in-country workshops by our partner in the global reform effort, the InterAcademy Medical Panel (IAMP), have now held them. At least three of them are proceeding with reform efforts, including South Africa, Nigeria and Sri Lanka. (See stories below). Sweden's workshop is being held at the end of this month and Bangladesh's on 15 October.

Another partner--the U.S. Institute of Medicine's Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education--recently convened Forum members and its Innovation Collaborative teams for a workshop on using interprofessional education to improve health by linking education to practice. (story below).

We each also have news to report. Harvard School of Public Health received a big boost in its reform efforts with a $5 million gift to fund a "leadership incubator," which will foster changes we're planning in educating public health leaders to better meet 21st century challenges. LC joined in 95th anniversary festivities at Peking Union Medical College and contributed to a lively debate of what constitutes "excellence" in medical education. (read about his talk on our website)

Our website at www.healthprofessionals21.org lists news and upcoming events related to health education reform. Let us know if you have news to add and please pass along this newsletter to colleagues who might also be interested. IOM Global Forum Workshop Links Health Education to Practice

U.S. Institute of Medicine's Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education held a workshop at the end of August on "Educating for Practice: Improving Health by Linking Education to Practice Using Interprofessional Education (IPE)." The Global Forum was launched in February 2012, inspired in large part by the Lancet Commission report and spearheaded by Commissioner Patrick Kelley, MD, DrPH. Two other Lancet report Commissioners, Jordan Cohen, MD and Afaf Meleis, PhD, co-chair the Global Forum. This story also links to descriptions of what each of the Forum's Innovation Collaboratives are doing, including teams from South Africa, India, Uganda and Canada. Read more.

Progress Disseminating Report Globally Through Medical/Science Academies

The InterAcademy Medical Panel--a global organization that includes 71 national medical academies and science academies as members--has continued to actively "disseminate, discuss and assess for local relevance the conclusions and recommendations of the Commission report." Five of the seven member academies selected to hold workshops in their countries have held those workshops, and three countries--South Africa, Nigeria and Sri Lanka (see story below)--are following up with further activities as part of the project. Harvard School of Public Health to Transform Education for Public Health Leaders

A $5 million gift has been made to Harvard School of Public Health to fund a "Leadership Incubator for Strengthening Health Systems." The gift is a key component of the "Roadmap to 2013," a comprehensive review of HSPH's educational strategy, which is being undertaken as the School approaches its centennial in fall 2013. Plans also include creating a new DrPH degree, new state-of-the-art curricula, new teaching methods, and technology-enhanced learning. Read more.

Sri Lanka Proceeding with Reform Recommendations

Sri Lanka is embracing the Lancet commission report findings and is considering what lessons are applicable to their health educational system. At a national meeting of the Forum of Sri Lankan Medical Educationists (FOSME) at the University of Colombo on 10-11 August 2012, participants followed up on recommendations made at the country's launch of the report in June.
