Dear Colleague,

Even during these summer months we have quite a few activities to report. Both of us are still frequently asked to present our Lancet report findings. One of us (JF) presented them to more than 150 students and faculty of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and University of Toronto community in Canada last month. (See story on the website). LC will be presenting a keynote on transforming health professional education next month in Thailand for the International Conference in Medicine and Public Health 2012.

Other commissioner colleagues are also disseminating the findings, including Barry Kistnasamy (of University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa), at a MEPI workshop in June, and coming up next month, Zulfi Bhutta (Aga Khan University Medical Center in Pakistan) and David Serwadda (former Dean of the Makerere School of Public Health in Uganda) at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.

Our partners in the global reform effort have also been busy. The InterAcademy Foundation of the InterAcademy Medical Panel (IAMP), led by Bernie Jones, has selected 7 countries for launch workshops to increase dialogue and spur health professional education reform. You can read about South Africa's workshop below. Nigeria has also held one.

And the four innovation collaboratives that are a key part of Patrick Kelley's Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education of the US Institute of Medicine have all kickstarted their educational reform plans. You can read more about what Canada's is doing in the story below. On our website are stories about the plans of the other three innovation collaboratives: South Africa, India and Uganda.

We have added Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/HealthPros21) and Twitter ( https://twitter.com/#!/HealthPros21) pages to our communications outreach. South African Science Academy to Champion Health Pro Education Reform

The Academy of Science of South Africa hosted a workshop to discuss transforming the education of health professionals for the 21st century on 24 July 2012. South Africa is one of seven countries selected to hold workshops as part of the InterAcademy Medical Panel's (IAMP) effort to disseminate the Lancet Commission report recommendations to its member medical academies. Participants--representing academia, health profession associations, and the Department of Health--unanimously agreed that the report provides valuable recommendations and that South Africa needs to take urgent concrete actions to reform the education of its health professionals.
