Megatrends and Priorities in Transforming Medical Education

Dear Colleague,

We are extremely pleased to report steady progress in stimulating debate about how to better prepare the global health workforce for the 21st century. The Lancet Commission report continues to catalyze lively discussions and critical reflection among diverse groups and nations.

Our two partners--the InterAcademy Medical Panel and the U.S. Institute of Medicine Global Health Forum--have contributed significantly to the momentum of reform. The IAMP has disseminated the report to 68 countries and has selected 7 countries to hold in-country launches of the report to discuss report recommendations in context of local applicability (see story below).

This month, the U.S. Institute of Medicine's Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education held its first planning meeting. There was a lot of energy in the room generated by the 47 members in attendance! The forum has 29 associations and foundations as supporting members--representing medicine, nursing, public health, pharmacy, dietetics, dentistry, social work, psychology, among other disciplines. Representatives from the Innovation Collaboratives also attended as well as other at-large members.

The forum was spearheaded by Dr. Patrick Kelley and is co-chaired by two other Lancet report Commissioners, Professor Afaf Meleis (Dean, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing) and Dr. Jordan Cohen (George Washington University School of Medicine and former President of the Association of American Medical Colleges). You can read more about the meeting below.

We very much appreciate your continuing interest. You'll find more news and upcoming events on our website, which is updated weekly at http://www.healthprofessionals21.org.

Best regards,

Dr. Jones reports that seven member academies have been selected to hold workshops in their countries "to further disseminate, discuss and assess for local relevance the conclusions and recommendations of the Commission report": Bangladesh, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Sweden. IOM Global Forum Holds First Planning Meeting

The Institute of Medicine's (IOM) Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education held its inaugural meeting on March 8 in Washington, DC--the first opportunity for the 46 forum members in attendance to meet and plan the year's activities for the new forum. The idea for the forum was inspired in large part by the Lancet Commission report and intends to engage diverse professionals in scholarly debate over the future of education for the world's health professionals and to incubate and evaluate new ideas--the four Innovation Collaboratives that were selected in January 2012. New Tool to Assess Social Accountability in Health Education

The Training for Health Equity Network (THEnet)--a global partnership of health professional schools--has just published a new evaluation tool that will allow health and medical schools to assess whether they are contributing to the improvement of health conditions within their communities. The Evaluation Framework for Socially Accountable Health Professional Education applies the principles of social accountability to the training of health professionals. Read more.
