Some Thoughts from our OCE Partners

Jan Pittman Vanderpool, Ph.D.
Founder and Executive Director
Bridge Over Digital Divide
Member of the OCE's Community Leadership Council (CLC)
Bridge Over Digital Divide, Inc. (BODD) is a 501(c) 3 California non-profit corporation and educational technology and training organization founded in 2004. The mission of BODD is to be the premier technology provider and trainer for residents in underserved communities in Southern California. BODD's intention is to not provide services in a vacuum but rather, recognizing that each individual is impacted and affected on multiple levels by their environment, BODD will positively impact lives by using free technology as a vehicle to synergistically offer literacy training in five distinct yet interrelated areas; health, academic, financial, employment and computer.
I earned my BA in Psychology and Chemistry from Luther College and a Diploma in Systems Analysis along with an MBA in Finance and Accounting from New York University. After relocating from New York to Los Angeles, I continued my academic pursuits earning a Masters of Arts degree in Psychology and a Masters of Arts degree in Educational Technology from Pepperdine University. Culminating my education, I earned a Doctorate in Education with an emphasis in Educational Psychology from the University of Southern California.
Over the past year, we, Bridge Over Digital Divide (BODD) have in concert with HACLA, Los Angeles OIC and One Economy, delivered and installed over 150 wireless Internet enabled computers to Jordan Downs public housing residents who have participated in a pre-requisite eight hour on-site training program. We have employed and trained community youth recruited through the local Maxine Waters Employment Preparation Center to refurbish, deliver and install the computers and provide on-going technical support. We are working to develop a health literacy component of the training and expand the role of these technical promotores to supplement and reinforce the information provided to residents .
The challenge to improve health literacy and subsequent health outcomes in a diverse, historically underserved community such as Watts, California is enormous. As member of the Community Leadership Council I am fortunate to have been able to forge wonderful working relationships among a wide variety of business and community stakeholders. CTSI has provided an inestimable amount of technical support in navigating the treacherous shoals of successful grant submission. |

"NIH-funded CTSAs have increasingly focused on community-engaged research and funded investigators for community-based participatory research (CBPR). However, because CBPR is a collaborative process focused on community-identified research topics, the Harvard CTSA and its Community Advisory Board (CERAB) funded community partners through a CBPR initiative. They describe lessons learned from this seed grants initiative designed to stimulate community-academic CBPR partnerships."
