Going To The Dogs
It has been said that it is just as difficult for believers to believe in the humanity of Jesus as it is for nonbelievers to believe in the divinity of Jesus. So it may be difficult for us to accept that in our focus text this week (Mark 7:24-37) Jesus appears to be having a bad day. We don't expect God to have a bad day. When last we were with Jesus, he was in the midst of a confrontation with Pharisees about his disciples violating Jewish tradition (not washing their hands prior to a meal).
Jesus then travels to Tyre. The text suggests he was tired. Upon his arrival he entered a home. He wanted to be alone. This was not to be. A woman whose daughter was ailing found Jesus and asked him to "drive the demon out of her daughter". In what has confounded readers of this text, Jesus offers a very curt response. "First let the children eat all they want for it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to the dogs." It is quite clear to whom Jesus is referring. The children in the text are the children of Israel and the dogs are everyone else.
A seemingly unloving answer from Love incarnate. Or is it? Perhaps the key is in the response the woman offers after her rebuke. "Lord," she replied, "even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." As the story goes, Jesus was clearly moved by her response and he proceeded to exorcise the demon. Jesus was not only moved by her response, but the woman changed Jesus. There is much to reflect upon within this text. We will spend some of our time on Sunday in worship doing just that.
When we use the idiom, "going to the dogs", it has come to mean that a person or an organization is becoming less successful than it was in the past. "Going to the dogs" in our focus text might mean just the opposite. Hmmm? Think about it!
In Christ,
Pastor Pete
