From the Pastor's Desk
Too Much Stuff!!
Many, many years ago I saw George Carlin perform for the first time (probably on television). For those of you who might not know of George Carlin he was a counter culture comedian who was very popular beginning in the late 1960's. His comedic skits sometimes were "racy" and always very "edgy". Frequently the topics he touched upon were issues of social importance and relevance. He liked to make fun of our culture.
One of his more notable (in my opinion) skits was entitled "Stuff". In "Stuff" he would describe how our entire lives are spent and engaged in the pursuit of "stuff". We build houses to keep our "stuff". When our house is full we get a bigger house where we keep more "stuff". We covet our neighbor's "stuff". We can never have enough "stuff". There is always more "stuff" to buy. Have you seen the latest "stuff". You get the idea.
It was hilariously funny (to me) and contained more than just a grain of truth. Carlin was, of course, speaking of our possessions and the control they exert over us; how the desire for material possessions may control our lives. Jesus knew something about this (surprise, surprise!). In Luke we read of Jesus suggestion that "we sell our possessions and give to the poor . . . for where your treasure is there your heart will be also". (Luke 12:33-34 NIV). This might be Jesus warning us about having too much "stuff".
Jesus, I think, wants us to laugh. I can almost see him delivering Carlin's skit; all the while making us laugh while also making a significant point about our lives. Maybe, just maybe, he is suggesting in our text for this week that we could do with just a little bit less "stuff" and give just a little bit more to our brothers and sisters in need. That, anyway, is what Carlin (and Jesus) want us to think about.
In Christ,
Pastor Pete
