From the Pastor's Desk In His Steps
In 1897, Charles Sheldon authored a work which was destined to become, after the Bible, the bestselling Christian book of all time. We are familiar with the phrase What Would Jesus Do? While used for centuries as a reminder we should imitate Christ in our actions, the phrase became much more popular after the publication of Sheldon's book, In His Steps: What Would Jesus Do?
The novel recounts the story of an unemployed man who approaches Reverend Henry Maxwell and asks him for some help. Maxwell brusquely ignores the request and sends the man on his way. Maxwell then returns to the work of preparing for that Sunday's upcoming sermon. At that Sunday's service, after the sermon is delivered, Maxwell looks up to see the same man walking up to "the open space in front of the pulpit". He challenges the faith of the congregation, admonishing them for not doing more to help those without jobs and without any means of support. He explains that his understanding of Christianity calls upon people to help others when they are suffering. Upon finishing his address to the congregation, he collapses, and dies a few days later.
Moved by this course of events, Rev. Maxwell challenges the congregation to imitate Christ in all of their actions. The novel chronicles the challenges which follow.
Every authorized minister is familiar with similar requests. This tale is hauntingly familiar to your pastor who remembers, not long ago, being summoned to the back of the sanctuary by an usher during a Sunday service to talk to a man who had walked into our church (and others) to ask for assistance to get to Pittsburgh to attend his mother's funeral. Special requests for food and shelter are more numerous. In your bulletin this Sunday, you will notice an insert which details some of the families and persons Zion has been able to help with food, rent and medications from resources you help provide to our Local Missions Fund.
On August 26, we will receive our second special offering to benefit the Local Missions Fund. Please help if you can. What would Jesus have you do with that extra dollar in your pocket?
In Christ,
Pastor Pete

Note from Camp... Dear Zion,
I am having a great time at camp. And I have learned a lot about Jesus. I just wanted to say thank you for helping so we could go to camp.
Sincerely,
Lizzie The Zion Campership Fund was able to financially assist four campers this summer to various camps through Outdoor Ministries~ Ohio Conference UCC. C.J. Abahazi attended Grandparents/Grandchild camp, Emily & Elizabeth Abahazi attended Daring & Dangerous camp and Sarah Newcomb attended the White Water Rafting camp. All of the campers had a great time!

VBS Mission Project
As part of VBS, we will have a mission story each day. The children will also be putting together "care bags" that will be donated to SHARE, an organization committed to sharing essential supplies with homeless and hurting people. We need your help gathering these supplies! Items we need for the kits are: washcloths, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, shampoo, combs & gallon sized Zip-loc bags. A box is in the back of the sanctuary for the items. Thank you!
Zion Feeds the Biodigester!
In one month, we have nearly raised our goal of $500. We have raised $441! We should all be pleased to be able to help reduce food insecurity in Nicaragua. Praise God!

Special Association Meeting
Saturday, August 25 from 9:30 to noon
St. John's UCC
285 West National Drive
Newark, OH43055
(740) 323-2407
We will meet to hear, discuss and affirm (or not) something extraordinary - our CSEOA future story. Roger Miller, our interim Association Minister, will talk about his work among us and lead us in worship; the Vision Team will tell our future story - based on the many congregational and Authorized Minister listening sessions held earlier this year; Dick Hamm, our consultant, will invite us to answer three questions together in order to affirm our shared story; and then we will have time as a congregation or peer group to discuss and refine the story.
Here's the agenda for the day:
9:30 AM Opening Devotions
9:45 AM Future Story Presentation
10:30 AM Small and Large Group Discussion
11:30 AM Closing Worship
12 Noon Adjourn
ALL ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND this very important Association meeting - your presence and perspective are vital to what we discern and commit to as our future story together.
Please let Carrie or Pastor Pete know if you would like to attend, so they can RSVP to the association and put together a car-pool for those attending.
