Water and The Spirit

It is a special occasion when a Christian faith community celebrates the sacrament of baptism.  It has been quite some time since we have celebrated a baptism at Zion. We will participate in the sacrament of baptism this Sunday as we welcome Russ and Jan Anible's granddaughter Olivia into the church, the Body of Christ, through her baptism.  This is a significant and joyous moment in the life of the church as the congregation, on behalf of the wider church, promises to love and care for a child and to nurture and support her in her faith journey.

This is a duty and responsibility we should and do take seriously.  It is, of course, one of the most compelling reasons why we gather and worship together in community.  The depth and breadth of our faith journey together is found in the support we find in each other. When the joys of life are experienced we share those joys with others.  When the sufferings of life press down upon us we are lifted up by those who would try to relieve our anguish.

It has been observed that many persons who describe themselves as "spiritual but not religious" are leaving the church for spiritual fulfillment elsewhere.  In the sacraments of communion and baptism we find signs of God's visible presence in our lives and our call to God's Table and to baptism remain powerful claims upon our lives as we find union with Christ, with each other, and with the church of every time and every place.

Please plan to be in worship this Sunday for Olivia's baptism.  See you in the pews!

In Christ,

Pastor Pete

Matt Fields' surgery yesterday at the Cleveland Clinic went well.  All of the old hardware from his previous back surgery was replaced. All of the old screws were loose. No wonder he was in such chronic pain!  Please keep Matt in your prayers for his continued healing.
