Let's Feed the Biodigester
"Hey Mike, we're not in Ohio are we?" Th at fact became increasingly apparent as we walked through pineapple fields, meandered through a Nicaraguan rain forest, preached in a small village church, stood on the precipice of a dormant volcano, watched an active volcano "letting off steam", played with children in elementary schools, walked on the roof of a colonial Spanish cathedral, were filmed for the Heifer International website, and became fully immersed in the hospitality and culture of new surroundings.
What a joy and meaningful experience it was to represent Zion to new friends and communities as Mike, Sarah, Emily and myself traveled to Nicaragua on this year's Partnership Pilgrimage. Each of us were moved in different ways. One of my most transformational experiences was the Global Ministries Biodigester project which is being coordinated by our hosts, the Iglesia Mision Christiana. In a remote part of Nicaragua, to which we traveled, we came to understand the needs and challenges of our new friends in the village of San Pedro.
Having witnessed the clear-cutting of many or the native forests, our brothers and sisters are finding it increasingly difficult to find wood with which to build fires upon which they cook. Global Ministries has assisted the village with the installation of a biodigester which converts cow manure into methane gas. The purchase of a small gas range now provides a new way for the villagers to prepare meals.
We can help promote and expand this significant project with our treasure. I am challenging members of this congregation to raise the modest sum of $500 by December 1 to expand the cooking sites in this section of Nicaragua. We can do it!! I know that we can!! The $500 gift from Zion will be matched with gifts from those who have decided to send contributions to the project in lieu of family Christmas gifts this year. The total amount of $1,000 will provide the funds necessary to buy and install 5 new biodigesters!! More details will follow.
LET'S FEED THE BIODIGESTER.
It is good to be home.
