This Week at Zion
In this week's focus text from the Acts of the Apostles, we read that Peter and his companions were "astounded" that the Holy Spirit had been poured out upon all present, even the Gentiles. Who are the Gentiles today? Gays and lesbians? Those with mental illness? The homeless? Those with HIV/Aids? Are we astounded and surprised to hear news that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are poured out upon ALL who hear the word? We shouldn't be astounded or surprised at God's grace for ALL people; and ALL means ALL. Plan to be with us at Zion this Sunday. ALL are welcome.
Thank you for serving Zion this Sunday:
Liturgist: Debbie Morris
Ushers/Greeters: Jerry & Ann Elliot

From the Pastor's Desk
Build It, They (He) Will Come
I often wonder how it happens that a "place" is transformed into something different than it was before. It may represent the hard work of many dedicated individuals focused on making a difference occur. That will change a "place". The development of a new identity can emerge from serious and critical thinking about change; a new vision of what a "place" might be. There are probably an infinite number of inputs and outputs related to a "place" undergoing transformation. A change may happen when change is inspired by a particular calling.

Remember the movie "A Field of Dreams" where an individual was called to build a baseball field in the middle of an Iowa cornfield? That cornfield, that place, was changed in an inspirational way. The change was inspired by a voice suggesting to the main character, Ray, that if he built the ball field, "he" would come. Later in the movie we find out that "he" referred to Ray's father and, in fact, the presence of his deceased father does appear to reconcile their damaged relationship stemming from an event early in Ray's life. Ray meets his father late in the film at home plate on the ball field.
When we think about Zion's transformation into a new place, perhaps we should think in these terms; "build it, He will come". God's sweet, sweet spirit will come to this place. We are building a safe and warm and welcoming place of worship. If we build it, He will come. Amen?
In Christ's Love,
Pastor Pete

Music for Gabriel
Benefit Concert
Monday, May 14th 7:00pm Hayes Auditorium
Gabriel lost his fight against bone cancer in 2011 at the young age of six. He was the son of Rhonda Mizok Taylor who has served as a piano accompanist for Hayes choral events. In addition to the devastating loss of their child, the family is faced with staggering medical bills.
Help join the celebration of Gabriel's life with the gift of music. Entry is free but donations will be accepted at the door. All proceeds will go to help the Taylor family.

In Covenant
All were moved at Zion last Sunday as Don Chenoweth, Director of Andrew's House, joined us for worship and brought a message of love. Co-preaching with Pastor Pete, Don brought us a message that we are moved to do more than word and speech, we are moved in truth and action to help those who need assistance and those who need to be cared for. Don shared with us the many efforts of Andrews House within the community which are making a difference for some very vulnerable persons. On Sunday, Zion affirmed our covenantal relationship with Andrews House. We are pleased to have such a wonderful partner!

Volunteers Needed
We are looking for volunteers to assist with the Free Summer Lunch Program at Woodward Elementary this summer. The volunteer service would involve helping to set up the site, tearing down the site and helping children open those hard to open items in their lunch. The Woodward Family Resource Center in partnership with Andrews House and the Delaware City Schools administers the program. Please let Pastor Pete or Carrie know if you are able to help with this important effort. Please help if you can! |

Memorial Garden
As we approach this Memorial Day, we will be remembering those who have made the transition from this life to the next over the past year. We will remember Dale Barger, Nancy Fuchs, Bob Miller, Doris Patterson, Louise Sells and Elizabeth Wheeler in a Memorial Garden planted on the church grounds. If we have inadvertently omitted one of your loved ones or one who had a special connection to Zion from this list, please let Carrie know in order that we do not forget anyone who made a special contribution to our lives or to the life of Zion.
