This Week at Zion
We are continually assailed by the marketing forces of our contemporary culture. We are asked over and over and over again to try new products. This one will make you prettier. This one will make you thinner. This one will make you healthier. This one will make you wiser. Buy this new and improved version and your life will change! Really? Perhaps we look for new and improved products in the wrong places. Aren't we offered new and improved life in Christ as a promise of the Resurrection we experienced on Easter (and hopefully on each day)? Come and be with us as we think about "buying" into the product of new life in Christ this Sunday at Zion. All are welcome at Zion.
Thank you for serving Zion this Sunday:

From the Pastor's Desk
The Sounds of Silence
Saint Bernard of Clairvaux once wrote, "Continual silence, and removal from the noise of the things of this world and forgetfulness of them, lifts the heart and asks us to think of the things of heaven and sets our heart upon them." As we prayerfully prepare for worship together, let us appreciate times of silence when we are able to slow ourselves down; when we are able to be still. "Be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46). We are a busy, busy people living in a busy, busy culture. Silence is helpful if we are serious about renewing and refreshing a relationship with God in prayer and reflection. In worship this week, take the opportunity during moments of silence to listen for where God is calling you to go. Listen for God's voice suggesting what Zion should be doing to advance God' kingdom here on earth.
The 14th century mystic Meister Eckhart said, "Nothing in all creation is so like God as silence." Try this out. Be still and absolutely silent in a quiet place for five or ten minutes. Make sure your "retreat" is a place with no distractions. Let me know about your journey into the "sounds of silence".
Peace and Silence in Christ,
Pastor Pete

Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship

Well, the cutoff deadline to apply for Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarships has come and gone. What a response! The final number of applications was 1,544. As members of Zion may know, this new state educational program was named for our pastor. "I don't know whose idea it was to name this scholarship after me. But I do know this, thousands of very vulnerable children who are awarded the scholarship will be provided with meaningful educational interventions. This scholarship will change lives." The Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship provides state funding for special education students who wish to be educated in private or alternative public settings. The program was modeled on the Autism Scholarship Program which was developed by Pastor Pete during his time in the Ohio General Assembly.

Ohio Autism Taskforce
As chairman of the Ohio Autism Taskforce (OAT), Pastor Pete will be leading five regional forums on the topic of improving services to individuals with autism here in Ohio. PP chaired the original OAT nearly ten years ago which made policy recommendations to the Ohio legislature. Many of the recommendations of the taskforce were subsequently enacted including the Autism Awareness license plate, the Autism Scholarship Program, Mental Health Parity insurance coverage, the creation of the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence and other recommendations. The regional forums will be held in Akron, Athens, Bowling Green, Columbus, and Dayton. The first regional forum was held yesterday at the Ohio University campus in Athens. The dates of other scheduled forums are available on the website of the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence. www.ocali.org
