One Great Hour
of Sharing
OGHS is the refugee, relief and development offering of the United Church of Christ. It transforms lives through health, education, agricultural, and emergency relief initiatives in 138 countries.
This year, as you make your offering to One Great Hour of Sharing, remember the joy your gifts offers others, is hope. Sow bountifully and share abundantly, knowing that you are not only helping change the statistics, are helping change lives.

This Week at Zion
We have come a distance since our first message on prayer three weeks ago. This Sunday we conclude with the third sermon in this series: Prayer: Moving Out. We have reflected together about prayer which moves us into ourselves seeking transformation, prayer which moves us up into God's glory and now we think about prayer which moves us out into ministry. Richard Foster reminds us that "transformation and intimacy both cry out for ministry." We are transformed that we might give to others. We are drawn up into an intimate relationship with God that we might share God's love with others. Now we pray that in Christ we can make a difference in this world. All are welcome at Zion. See you on Sunday!

A Friend
During my life I have had many friends. I have been very, very blessed to have shared time and space with some very wonderful people who have helped me in any number of ways. When I was a teenager, friends would help me cope with the adolescent grief of a bad first date or some other social calamity. In college, friends would help me understand the different cultures and environments from which they came, from across the country, to a small town in Ohio. In my chosen career of public service, I have always been guided and mentored by caring persons who helped me to develop ethically, professionally and as a person.
Last Sunday was special for me as an opportunity to welcome such a friend to Zion to deliver a loving message of building the Body of Christ using the gifts God has blessed each of us with. Sunday was also particularly memorable for me because Forrest Hoppe has been a significant person for me in my faith journey and is a friend who has made a measurable and valuable contribution to my understanding of who I am in Christ and where I am called to be in ministry. He has done this by being a friend; a friend who has been willing to spend time to nurture me in important ways for ministry.
Forrest has not only been here for me, he has been here for Zion. In a melancholy moment after the service Forrest suggested that Sunday might be the last time he would ever be in Zion and, while not overly sentimental, I could tell that comment carried significant emotion for him. Forrest loves Zion very much. Pastor Bertie Dell, during the service, recognized the significant assistance Forrest has rendered to Zion. She was, as the Brits say, "spot on". In good times and bad, Forrest has been a reassuring, caring, teaching and loving guide in our journey here at Zion.
As Forrest prepares for his transition in ministry (to the state up north, no less), we wish him well and echo the sentiments of Matthew's Gospel, "Well done, good and faithful servant". We wish him well on the journey ahead and know the Spirit is calling him to significant new relationships and engagements in the days ahead.
In Christ's Service,
Pastor Pete

Relay for Life
This year, at the suggestion of several members, Zion will be participating in a new event which will raise funds for an important effort. We will be, as a congregation, participating in Relay for Life. Relay For Life is a life-changing cancer event that helps communities across the globe fight back against cancer. Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs for your American Cancer Society. This year's event is scheduled for June 15-16. Terri Miller has volunteered to be a co-team leader. Who will volunteer to assist her as a fellow co-team leader? It is hard for us to imagine that there is anyone in the congregation who has not been impacted in some way by cancer. Let's embrace this new giving and serving opportunity as we do all of our efforts at Zion; as the Little Church that Could. Additional details about our participation will be forthcoming. Please contact Terri Miller or Pastor Pete if you have any questions about this event.
