Food + Education = Hope in Haiti

There are many children in Haiti, but only 20 percent of them have the opportunity to attend school or learn to read and write. Parents who can barely feed their families only dream of providing their children with an education. Gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing provide support to children who want to learn. Now, children are not only attending school, they are also enjoying nutritious hot meals.

From
the Pastor's Desk

I have just returned with Melissa from about 14 hours at Grant Hospital for a procedure which would determine whether her circulation was deteriorating from bypass surgery she underwent about a year and a half ago.  The news, after the procedure today, was unbelievably good.  There is absolutely no blockage in the area of the earlier procedure.

During a discussion with one of the nurses who was preparing Melissa for surgery early in the morning, the nurse described one of the bruises on one of Melissa's feet as a "life sign".  I asked her what she meant.  She said, in response, "it's hard to go through life without getting a little bruised now and then".  Amen!!

Melissa has a few new bruises after her surgery. Those bruises are physical.  But in life, sometimes we are also bruised and battered emotionally.  I will go out on a limb and say that many of us have had "Good Friday" moments where either physically or emotionally we thought we were at the end, that we could take no more suffering.

As we approach Easter Sunday, we remember that we are not alone.  We may be afraid.  We may be anxious.  We may be broken.  Melissa had a great physician and surgeon helping her today.  We have the Great Physician and Healer to help us with wounds that are not so visible.

In Christ's Service,

Pastor Pete

New Members Class

We will begin our Spring New Members Class at Zion on Tuesday March 13.  We will meet at the church in the Pastor's office at six o'clock.  Any person interested in becoming a member of Zion United Church of Christ will be welcomed as we embark upon conversation which will discuss our tradition and history as the United Church of Christ and our tradition and history as Zion Church.  This will be the first of several meetings leading up to a May service when we welcome members of the class as members of Zion.  What a particularly opportune time to become a new member at Zion; during our 175th Anniversary as a faith community in Delaware.  Please contact Pastor Pete if you have any questions in regard to this class.

Prayers & Cards Welcomed

We are praying for Sandy Nichols, Melissa Peterson and Ann Elliot. Sandy is recovering from surgery where they removed a portion of her lung. Melissa underwent surgery yesterday to improve circulation in her leg. Ann will undergo diagnostic surgery on Monday. Prayers, calls and cards are welcomed and encouraged.

Relay for Life

This year, at the suggestion of several members, Zion will be participating in a new event which will raise funds for an important effort.  We will be, as a congregation, participating in Relay for Life.  Relay For Life is a life-changing cancer event that helps communities across the globe fight back against cancer.  Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs for your American Cancer Society.  This year's event is scheduled for June 15-16.  Terri Miller has volunteered to be a co-team leader.  Who will volunteer to assist her as a fellow co-team leader?

It is hard for us to imagine that there is anyone in the congregation who has not been impacted in some way by cancer.  Let's embrace this new giving and serving opportunity as we do all of our efforts at Zion; as the Little Church that Could.  Additional details about our participation will be forthcoming.  Please contact Terri Miller or Pastor Pete if you have any questions about this event.
