This Week at Zion

As we begin this Lenten season together, we think of penance, repentance, almsgiving and self-denial.  We also think of prayer.  Prayer is about a love relationship with a loving God.  It shouldn't be hard work.  It should be a labor of love.  Lent provides us with an ideal opportunity to investigate and explore what prayer means to each of us in our daily lives.  This Sunday at Zion we will begin a three week series on prayer based, loosely, on an important work by Richard J. Foster titled, appropriately, Prayer.  "Dear God, I am so grateful for your invitation to enter your heart of love.  As best I can I come in. Thank you for receiving me.  Amen."  This prayer will be our guiding spirit for the next three weeks.  Plan to be with us at Zion, where All are Welcome.

Prayer

Richard Foster opens his book on prayer by suggesting that God weeps and mourns and aches that we have become so distant and so preoccupied with things that are less than God. God wants us to restore a relationship with God. God wants us to draw closer. God cries out for us. God wants us to come home.

It would be presumptuous of me to tell you how to pray, how often to pray or what to pray for. I will suggest, however, that Foster is right when he suggests that the key to initiating, restoring or deepening a relationship with God comes through prayer. God has shown us a way back. "if the key is prayer, the door is Jesus Christ. How good of God to pr
ovide us a way into his heart."

During our Lenten times together we will explore prayer in three sermons titled, respectively, Moving In, Moving Up and Moving Out. Prayer is a pathway by and through which we can change our lives by surrendering to God's
love and joy and peace and patience and kindness and gentleness. Together we will investigate prayer as a means by which we can Move In to transform ourselves thereby preparing ourselves to Move Up into God's glory and Move Out into ministry.

Please plan to be with us in worship.

"Prayer - secret, fervent, believing prayer - lies at the root of all personal godliness." - William Cary.
