This Week at Zion

Jesus met the leper.  The oldest translations of this week's text from Mark say that when Jesus met the leper, he was angry.  Perhaps his anger was directed at the rules and regulations of a social structure which cast aside the "unclean", the others who didn't conform to societal norms.  Who are the lepers today?  Who are the untouchables? Who have we predestined to live on the margins of society?  Upon whom have we cast a judgment of social death?  We will investigate this matter in greater detail Sunday morning.  Plan to be with us at Zion where no matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome.

From
the Pastor's Desk

One of the first books I read as a (young!) student at Ohio Wesleyan in 1973 was The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. This powerful piece of work still inspires me.  In fact, when our local library  several years ago invited persons from Delaware to be featured in a promotional series of posters with favorite books, The Invisible Man is the work I chose to be photographed with.

Invisible Man is narrated in the first person by the protagonist, an unnamed African American man who considers himself socially invisible.  The novel, from the narrator's perspective, chronicles the life events of a black man in mid-20th century America who recedes into an "underground" world of invisibility.

There were invisible men and women in Jesus' time. There are invisible men and women today.  In the time of Jesus, the "unclean" literally were living on the margins of society. They were forced to live "outside of the camp", on the outskirts of the village or town.   Doesn't the same result occur when we ignore or do not see  today's "untouchables"?

Jesus sent the leper to the temple to be ritualistically reincorporated into society by priests.

What do we do?

Spring Book Study

The Zion Spring Book Study will begin in early March. We will be reading, discussing and reflecting upon the book, Christianity for the Rest of Us: How the Neighborhood Church is Transforming the Faith. Our book was written by Diana Butler Bass, a popular contemporary preacher and theologian. To enable us to order enough copies of the book for those who wish to participate in the study, please let Pastor Pete know by THIS SUNDAY if you want us to order a book for you. We will meet Saturday mornings at different locations.

"Freedom to Love,
Freedom to Marry" -This Sunday!

On February 12, 2012 there will be an Interfaith Rededication and Solidarity Celebration at the First Unitarian Universalist Church which is located at 93 West Weisheimer Road in Columbus. On this day we will rededicate ourselves to our spouses and our partners and to the inalienable and sacred right of individuals to choose their partners for life.

Couples of any sexual orientation and gender identity who have made a lifetime commitment to each other are welcome to join in a rededication of their relationship.

Pastor Pete will be participating in the service. Please see PP for any details in regard to this meaningful time of community fellowship. Carpooling will be available.
