Message from the Executive Director
Election Outcome will have Deep Impact on the Arts
Dear Friends,
As we put the finishing touches on 2010, Arizona Citizens/Action for the Arts is focused on our advocacy and awareness activities that begin after January 1.
We know we face another difficult year at the Arizona State Legislature with more severe threats to public funding that sustains the Arizona Commission for the Arts. In December, the Arizona Action for the Arts board will adopt a set of principles to guide our efforts.
We believe:
- Public funding for the arts is a necessary investment to help sustain arts programming and access for all Arizona citizens.
- The arts represent a creative sector that generates thougsands of small business jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity statewide.
- Arts education impacts educational excellence by enhancing academic performance and student engagement and improving the school learning environment.
We must deliver these messages frequently and effectively to our elected officials. One way we will do so is by matching a liaison with each legislator to ensure his or her understanding of the importance of Arizona's arts economy.
Now is also the time to put three important AzCA/AzAA activities on your calendar.
First, kick off the holiday season with a rollicking good time at "Hairspray" at Phoenix Theatre on Dec. 7 and support AzCA/AzAA at the same time.
Second, Arts Congress - our State Capitol rally to meet one-on-one with legislators - is February 7.
And of course, we are planning a huge celebration on April 12 when we gather for the 30th Anniversary Governor's Arts Awards at the Herberger Theatre. Don't forget to submit your nominations by December 3.
Read more about all of these events and activities in this edition of the newsletter.
Happy Holidays and best wishes for an art-filled 2011!
Catherine "Rusty" Foley
Interim Executive Director

| Legislative Liaisons Needed
For the 2011 Session
| |
The upcoming Arizona Legislative session promises to be challenging as we continue to advocate on behalf of the Arizona Commission on the Arts and arts and cultural organizations across the state.
We're looking for volunteers willing to serve as Legislative Liaisons beginning with important responsibilities at Arts Congress at the State Capitol on Monday, Feb. 7. But the job won't end there since we will be reaching out to legislators throughout the session with important information and messages about economic value, cultural importance and quality of life contributions of Arizona's arts and culture organizations.
You don't need to have a relationship with a Legislator to be a liaison, although that is certainly helpful. If you're willing to step up and jump into the effort and build a relationship, that's equally important. We will provide advocacy training and support.
If you are interested, or just need more information, call Arizona Citizens for the Arts at (602) 253-6535 or send us an email at artsed@azcitizensforthearts.org

| | Advocacy Spotlight | |
For nearly four decades the Arts in Education Council for Scottsdale Schools has been advocating for the arts budget and program needs in the Scottsdale Schools. This organization of parents and educators has been behind efforts to expand music and visual arts programs, artists-in-residence opportunities and arts-related field trips, and has awarded more than 150 scholarships to district students for instrumental and fine arts summer camps.
The council and its programs are partially underwritten by individual Scottsdale schools, grants, support from community organizations and individual donations.
Among the Council's goals are advocating for the arts in Scottsdale schools, expanding arts opportunities for teachers and students and working to insure that arts education in the Scottsdale Unified School District meets Arizona Arts Standards.
