Capital Campaign Update

Construction:

May was a very busy month.

The exterior walls and roofs have been 90% installed and are being prepared for installation of the final paint finish of the building. The roof top mechanical units have been installed along with the main supply and return shaft along with final completion of the plumbing and sprinkler system installation. Interior walls have begun to be covered in gyp board.  To view more pictures of the progress, see our Facebook Capital Campaign photo album.

In the month of May, new things are happening.  Families are benefitting from yoga, a new Parent Education Center is supporting the Pico Union neighborhood, and Hope Street parents continue to give back.  As always, please feel free to contact me directly with any comments or questions at (213) 742-5869 or by email  Amy.Costello@DignityHealth.org.

Community Yoga Relieves Family Stress

Certified Instructors Offer Four Yoga Classes Per Week

Adult comments:

"Yoga has helped me maintain control of my stress and have more patience."

"Yoga has made me a better person and taught me to have better thoughts. There has been a big change in me."

Children comments:

"I learned how to breathe in and out if you are mad."

"I learned how to get quiet and clam down."

"I liked when we play and do sun salutations."

Community partner Immanuel Presbyterian Church is demonstrating great results by offering bilingual, multi-level yoga classes to adults and children.  Nearly 200 children and adults benefitted from the weekly community yoga classes: 77% of the 60 adults lowered their weight, BMI and/or blood pressure; and 80% of the 132 children increased their strength and 86% lowered their BMI or were not at risk. Certified yoga instructors lead the community yoga classes, as well as offer series of classes in Restorative Yoga and yoga retreats.  Over the past 12 months,a total of 254 persons (122 adults and 132 children) have particpated in yoga classes. For more information, contact Health Coordinator Judith Alton at (213) 742-5549.

Parent Education Center in Pico Union

Best Start Metro LA Collaborative Partners Project Support

Earlier this year, Hope Street Family Center received a Best Start Collaborative Partner grant in support of its parent education efforts at our satellite Early Childhood Center, located in the densely populated neighborhood of Pico Union. New parent classes at this site include Family Yoga, Computers 101, a Fatherhood men's support group and Pre-ESL Spanish Literacy classes through a partnership with the Centro Latino for Literacy, intended for parents with less than two years of academic education.

The Parent Education Center builds upon the existing services offered at Hope Street Family Center's satellite Early Childhood Center and serve as a centralized community center. The project addresses Best Start parent priorities and Best Start goals of ensuring that children are free of abuse/neglect, ready for kindergarten, and maintain a healthy weight. Best Start is a place-based initiative through First 5 LA aimed at building resources and providing access to activities that improve the development and overall well-being of young children. For information related to class registration contact Program Coordinator

Juan Ledezma at (213) 765-4026.
