Pass it Forward

Eagle Scout creates a Library in Pico Union for the children

In order to earn his Eagle Scout badge, Michael Bock presented a plan to his troup leader, recruited support, and took the iniciative to create a lending library at the Early Childhood Center in Pico Union. Michael received

over 3,320 books and $1700 in donations. Installation of the library and transformation of the 2nd floor lobby took place on June 12th. Michael enlisted the help of over 36 volunteers working throughout the day from 9am-5pm. The library will benefit hundreds of neighborhood children and families by providing localized access to books in both Spanish and English. The lending library allows for books to be read at home or at the Center.  The impact is significant because the library will help to improve parent and child interaction, ultimately supporting family literacy and school readiness for children. Hope Street Family Center greatly appreciates the support of the Michael Bock, Boy Scout Troup 117 and the numerous volunteers. Their commitment and dedication will greatly benefit the local community of Pico Union for years to come.

Fatherhood Camping Retreat

44 fathers and children attended Rowdy Ridge Camp

The Fatherhood Program went to the San Gabriel mountains the weekend of June 24th.  This trip allowed fathers to spend time with their children having fun. Many of our fathers cannot afford the luxory of taking vacations, so this trip was extremely valuable for building strong father-child relationships. With the support of Rowdy Ridge and Hope Street Family Center, 15 fathers and 29 children spent time hiking, swimming, canoeing, and relaxing together as a family. These fathers are part of the Fatherhood Program that offers weekly support groups, parenting classes, and marriage workshops. For more information, contact Fatherhood Coordinator Juan Ledezma at (213) 765-4026.

Parents' Family Literacy Graduation

60 parents and 92 children celebrated together

What a success!  The Keck Hall at CHMC was full with excitement, as well as full with people. A crowd gathered to celebrate the educational gains of parents in their ESL classes. Those in attendance included Hope Street Family Center teachers, Abram Friedman Occupation Center administration, California Hospital staff, and other community partners. For more information about the Family Literacy Program, contact Judy Ramos at (213) 742-5854.
