Run for Your Life Youth Fitness
Partnership with USC Family Medicine Residency
The after-school youth center is running! On Wednesday evenings, as many as 50 students ages 6-18 have been running 1-3 miles. Team coaches include USC Family Medicine Resident Tony Truong, Hope Street After-school Coordinator Gina Avila, and CHMC, UCLA, USC volunteers. The Youth Fitness Program plans to run weekly for four months. They will train for the 5K "Kid 4 Kids" Run on April 17, 2011. Abigail (8 years old) runs with her mom because they think that running is fun and heart-heathy. In fact, it is the goal of Dr. Truong to increase healthy living awareness and assist our students in maintaining a healthy BMI (body mass index) in order to decrease the ir risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
We are looking for Sponsors, in order to assist in the following ways: to purchase team t-shirts that provide safe identification of kids running on the street, to provide snacks for after intense training; and to contribute support for the cost of the 5k event registration. We have contacted Nike for their support. However, the support of local sponsors or volunteers demonstrates an investment from within our community.
To volunteer or sponsor the Youth Fitness Project, contact Amy Parsons at (213) 742-5869 or Gina Avila at (213) 765-4003. |
