Have you seen ... Jessica?
  Success Story
Jessica_College BoundJessica,18, will be the first member of their family to attend college.  Jessica grew up in our neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles and attended the Hope St Youth Center.  Read her individual story below, as she tells it:

"I live in the building on the corner. My dream was to be the first in my family to attend and graduate from college. I came to the states five years ago after my mother was diagnosed and died of cancer. The only person who could take me in was my aunt here in downtown, in a studio apartment with her own family of six. I did not speak English when I came but none the less was enrolled in junior high. To make a long story short, I learned English and I graduated high school with a GPA of 3.4. I have also been accepted to both local and statewide schools and I was awarded scholarships by the Mike Shay Foundation with support from California Hospital. I never in my dreams believed I could do anything with my life. I didn't have a mother telling me that I could do it. But with the support I received from school staff, Hope St. staff and by believing in myself, I found the courage within. And I know in my heart that I will make it. And I know that my mother is looking down on me with great pride. Thank you for helping us and our community."
1st Annual Fatherhood Picnic
 Program Update
Hope Street Family Center hosted the first annual Fatherhood Picnic the last weekend of September at Toberman Park in Pico Union.  Juan Ledezma, Program Coordinator, said "It is interesting how hilarious and simultaneously heart warming a game as simple as Duck Duck Goose can be when the dads chase each other." Ledezma wants to extend a special thanks to CHMC staff and HSFC staff (Brother Louis Magdaleno, Oscar Diaz, William Ochoa, Cindy Ramirez, Mario Larrazabal and Adriana Aguirre-Robertson) who were able to attend the event and help out.

We had several fathers who had never participated in a HSFC Fatherhood event that expressed interest in attending classes in the future. For more information about the program, please contact Juan Ledezma at (213) 765-4026 or click here: Fatherhood Program.
