dA Message From The Director:

Happy Holidays everyone!  As we close out 2010, I reflect upon how far we have come since launching Nature's Academy.  Since 2007, nearly five thousand students have experienced our educational programs.  We hope they continue to transmit our message of conservation as ambassadors of sustainability.  Our success hinges upon the generous support of our partners, teachers and the passionate dedication of our staff and board members.  So I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who help us to achieve our mission.  We could not do it without you!  Have a wonderful holiday season and we wish you health and happiness in 2011!

Education Desk From the Education Desk:

Hello from the education department!  Nature's Academy has just wrapped up our most successful fall season to date.  Over 350 students came out and experienced our Island Adventures program, unlocking the mysteries at Fort De Soto Park and learning about the Tampa Bay estuary.  As the weather turns colder and water temperatures drop, we head into our winter season.  It is time for us to shift gears, get out of the water and onto dry land!

Winter is an excellent time for one of our many outreach programs such as our Flight Academy (physics!) or the newly revised Organic Earth (earth science!).  Immersed in a series of activities, participants discover how humans alter the Earth and impact its natural systems.  Students conduct an in depth investigation of the water cycle and the natural filtration of ground and surface water as they identify the causes and impacts of acid rain, industrial agriculture and oil spills on the environment.    Organic Earth challenges its participants to identify solutions to these problems as well as discover ways to become greener and promote sustainability - both locally and globally.  You can also choose to experience this program as a field trip to Sweetwater Organic Farm in Tampa, Florida.  This hands-on, interactive tour of a working farm teaches students to know what it truly means to "go green"!

For other field trips perfect for the winter season, check out Myakka Mysteries. In this program participants canoe the Upper Myakka Lake alongside the hundreds of resident alligators and experience Florida's largest state park from above the trees on the one of a kind canopy walk.  Winter is the ideal time for nature lovers to view hundreds of species of migrating birds within the park.   A full listing of programs and descriptions are available on our website so check it out and get your programs booked soon.

Baypoint classIsland Adventures Pilot Program Update:
Our Island Adventures Pilot Program (IAPP) is in full swing for the 2010/11 school year.  IAPP is an ongoing program designed to provide a fully funded marine science experience to local public school students from Manatee and Pinellas counties.  In the program's first year (2009/10), 300 Pinellas County students participated in IAPP.  In the program's second year, we have already conducted programs for 200 Pinellas County students with an additional 300 more scheduled for the spring season.   Additionally, we have expanded IAPP to include Manatee County students this year with the acquisition of a second educational site at Coquina Beach on Anna Maria Island.  Nature Walk We currently have 420 Manatee County students scheduled and will begin conducting IAPP programs at Coquina Beach at the end of March 2011. Thanks in part to grants and donations from Southwest Florida Water Management District, Tampa Bay Estuary Program, Sam's Club, and Walmart, we continue to see this worthwhile program grow each year. You can do your part to help support IAPP by making a donation on our website, becoming a member , or shopping for Nature's Academy merchandise on our new online store "The Spoonbill Shop".  Click on the link below for more information.
