Jael HagerottWelcome Jael Hagerott
IEYSA Director of Coaching-Recreation

IEYSA is excited to announce the hiring of Jael Hagerott, graduate of Whitworth University, as our new Director of Coaching for Recreational Soccer.  Jael brings an incredible amount of playing experience to the table, being a player in our Youth National Pool and a collegiate All-American.  She's a Spokanite through and through, from attending elementary school here in town to currently pursuing her graduate degree at Eastern Washington University.

Jael's collegiate coach, hails her as one of the top players to ever come out of Spokane, male or female.  Her soccer mind is outstanding, her technical abilities on the field impeccable and her desire to compete immense; however, this only topped by her humility.

From a coaching perspective, Jael has worked with youth and collegiate players.  Jael will work very hard to serve our recreation coaches to aid them in their pursuits of helping make soccer a more enjoyable experience for our kids.  Coach-training programs and training resources will be her priority and responsibility.  Jael is highly intelligent and even more hard working.  There are exciting opportunities in the offering and we cannot wait to provide them as the Fall season approaches!
Coaches Counsel shot on goal
July, 2010

I have had a chance to watch most of the 2010 World Cup games this summer and hope that you have as well. I LOVE soccer and nothing whets the appetite more than being able to watch quality players compete with and against one another on the world stage. One of the most striking features of the World Cup is the excitement and passion for the game that players and fans alike radiate. This joy, passion, and excitement for the game of soccer is one that players of all abilities, ages, and aspirations can come to enjoy.  It is this aspect of soccer that I hope to capture at the local level for our youth players.  My goal is to create an enjoyment for the game among our youth players, so that soccer is not just another thing that that they have to go to on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, but is one instead where they cannot wait for the next practice or game!

How do we create an environment that fosters a love for the game?  If you listen to world class players speak about their development, two key themes emerge over and over.  One, they always had a ball on their foot, and two, they PLAYED constantly. These two themes will serve as the cornerstone of player development in the recreational program. First, always having a ball on their foot will increase our youth players' comfort and confidence.  I want our youth players to have the confidence to dribble at players, shoot, and of course SCORE!  Similarly, I want our players to be able to control and pass the ball in a controlled and confident manner when they are under pressure.  Second, our youth players need to play, whether it is a 1 v 1 battle or a 3 v 3 game at the end of practice.  I believe that being able to play without coach or parent interference will be the most important aspect of not only developing our youth players' technical and tactical abilities, but also of developing a passion for the game.

I am sure that anyone who has coached at the youth level will testify that there is nothing as chaotic but rewarding as working with kids on the soccer field! I am excited about the opportunity to educate our volunteer coaches who sacrifice their time and energy to work with our youth players. What does 'educate' mean?  In this context, it means providing coaches with curriculum, saveinformation, and hands-on opportunities to learn how to successfully develop our youth players.  To help coaches organize and implement practices, I will be providing all coaches with a practice curriculum that outlines weekly session ideas that focus on developing the physical, technical, and tactical characteristics of our players, always keeping in mind our two key themes mentioned above.  It is my hope that this curriculum will be a helpful tool both in creating an enjoyable environment for the players as well as providing educational material for our youth coaches.  To complement the curriculum, I will also be conducting coaching clinics prior to or during the fall and spring seasons.  One of the best ways to learn is by doing, so during these clinics we will be learning and doing the exact things that are going to be taught to our players.

Ultimately, the purpose of the recreation program is to provide an environment where kids of all abilities and aspirations have FUN!  Playing soccer provides the benefits of physical activity and the development of friendships with peers, but these aspects are seriously diminished if a child is not enjoying what they are doing.  It is my hope and aspiration to have kids who not only are becoming competent soccer players but are enjoying the experience as well!

Looking forward to seeing you on the field!
