Newsletter April 13, 2012
|
Hello Everyone! Our weekend with the Very Hungry Caterpillar was great fun! We had a big turnout for both days, and our story time was a treat for everyone. Check out the pictures of the Caterpillar and some of his biggest fans!
Next Thursday, April 19th, we will be hosting a wine and cheese reception to thank and celebrate the Book Givers who will participate in World Book Night. Everyone is welcome -- please see details in the newsletter below.
We'll be the bookseller at the next LBPLF's Booked event, which will be held on April 22nd. This month, the Simple Supper is with Dr. John Jung, author of the memoir Southern Fried Rice. Reservations are required; contact information is below.
We are launching a Book Club for adults! Our first meeting will be on May 16th; please see below for all of the details. If you're interested in joining, please email us or sign up in the store!
If you have a few minutes, please complete this quick online survey. Your answers will be completely confidential and no personal information will be shared with any third parties. We are working with a marketing class at CSULB; your answers will help students complete a Google-partnered marketing campaign for a class project. You'll also be helping us improve our store!
Did you know that we have FREE PARKING in the lot behind Apostrophe Books? Parking on Second Street can be a challenge, and the meters can be an expensive hassle -- check out our free parking for a more pleasant shopping experience!
If you haven't already signed up, ask about our Frequent Buyer's Club the next time you're in the store. It's completely free to join, and the only information we need is your name: our system keeps track of your spending, and once you reach $100, you get a coupon for $5 off your next purchase! Live too far from Long Beach to visit our store? You can support us online! Visit www.apostrophebooks.net to buy books online, and like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter to get all of our updates! Happy reading! World Book Night!
Reception for Book Givers, April 19
World Book Night is an annual celebration designed to spread a love of reading and books. Started last year in the UK, World Book Night will be celebrated this year on April 23, 2012, across the US, the UK, and Ireland. Tens of thousands of book lovers will hand out free World Book Night paperbacks.
We love the idea of sharing books to encourage people to visit bookstores and libraries more often, and so Apostrophe Books signed up to be a WBN book pickup bookstore.
Our Book Givers will take a box of specially produced, not-for-resale paperback editions of popular books and distribute them to strangers -- or friends who aren't frequent readers. There are 30 titles on the list, a wide selection of poetry and fiction, ranging from The Kite Runner to The Hunger Games. On April 23rd, Book Givers will take their WBN books to a coffee shop or hospital, church or community center, an after-work party or train home, shopping mall or local school -- and give out 20 free paperbacks.
To celebrate and thank our Book Givers (and to hand out the book boxes!), we will be having a wine and cheese reception next Thursday night, April 19th, at 7 pm. Everyone is welcome to join us!

LBPLF's Booked! Event
A Simple Supper with Dr. John Jung
LBPF's next Booked: A Simple Supper for Library Lovers will be Sunday, April 22nd, with Dr. John Jung. Dr. Jung grew up in Macon, Georgia, where his family were the only Chinese in the small Southern town; he relates his experiences in his acclaimed memoirs, Southern Fried Rice, Sweet and Sour, and Chopsticks in the Land of Cotton. Professor Emeritus of Psychology at CSU Long Beach, Dr. Jung is a fascinating storyteller -- this is sure to be a stimulating and interesting dinner event! Booked will be held at Forbidden City restaurant, from 4 pm to 7 pm. The minimum donation is $40 per person, and reservations are required. Please email info@lbplfoundation.org or call 562-628-2441 to reserve your spot!
We are honored to be the bookseller at this very special event. Proceeds from all Booked events support Long Beach Public Library.
