Hello Everyone! We have lots of fun things to announce this March!
Our Pre-Teen Book Club, now known as the Secret Door Club, will hold their third meeting this week! The book discussions have been great so far, and we're very glad so many smart, enthusiastic kids have joined us.
We're very excited to have one successful book club up and running, and we will launch another one, for adults, before too long. If you're interested in joining, email us with book/meeting suggestions, and watch our newsletters for more info!
March kicks off the eleventh annual Long Beach Reads One Book! This year, we're reading Isabel Allende's Zorro, and we are very excited about all the great events planned to celebrate this thrilling novel. See below for details!
Yesterday marked Dr. Seuss's 108th birthday, and we are joining in the nationwide celebrations! We have a HUGE selection of all of your favorite Dr. Seuss titles, all 10% off! Have you seen the new Lorax movie yet? Make sure you get a copy of the book that inspired the movie! All copies of The Lorax are 10% off, every day, at Apostrophe Books!
March 24th is Belmont Shore's Chocolate Festival! We'll be participating -- see below for details!
We're very pleased to announce that one of our booksellers, Patti, is now blogging about books for the Belmont Shore-Naples Patch! Details and a link to her first review are below.
Did you know that there is FREE PARKING in the lot behind Apostrophe Books? Parking on Second Street can be a challenge, and the meters can be an expensive hassle -- check out our free parking for a more pleasant shopping experience!
If you haven't already signed up, ask about our Frequent Buyer's Club the next time you're in the store. It's completely free to join, and the only information we need is your name: our system keeps track of your spending, and once you reach $100, you get a coupon for $5 off your next purchase! Students and teachers! Did you know that we offer textbooks on our website, to rent or to buy? Visit www.apostrophebooks.net to pick up your text today. You can also bring your reading list in to us at the store, and we will be happy to help you find all the books you need for class or for a research project. Happy reading! Secret Door Club
Next Meeting: March 7th at 4pm
Our second meeting of the Pre-Teen Book Club was a lot of fun! We named ourselves the Secret Door Club! We discussed the first four chapters of Magyk by Angie Sage. Everyone came to the meeting pretending to be their favorite character in the book, and we answered interview questions and stayed in character for the whole meeting. Pretending to be characters from the book added a really interesting dimension to the discussion!
Our next meeting will be this Tuesday, March 7th. We're going to assemble in front of the store at 4pm and walk down to Yogurtland as a group. (Don't forget to bring money for your yogurt!) We'll be discussing chapters 5-14 during this meeting, and, like in our first meeting, we're going to try to stay in character for the whole discussion. If you are interested in joining us, we still have room for a few more members! Please call (562.438.7950) or stop in the store to sign up! You'll also need parental permission to join.

 Long Beach Reads One Book
Zorro, by Isabel Allende
Every year, the Long Beach Public Library sponsors a One Book, city-wide reading event. Long Beach Reads One Book encourages everyone in the city to read the same book, and to meet to discuss it in a variety of venues and formats. There will be activities geared for every reading level (elementary school students as well as high school and college students), plus events intended to include senior citizens and book clubs.
Isabel Allende's retelling of the Zorro legend is the perfect book for a city-wide read: it is a page turner with something for everyone. Set in California, the Caribbean, New Orleans, and Spain, this historical novel is jam-packed with adventure, intrigue, and romance. Allende's trademark wit, beautiful prose, and unforgettable characters are sure to have the whole city talking!
This coming Wednesday, March 7th, from 5:30 to 8 pm, the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) will host a "Special Evening of Zorro Culture" to kick off Long Beach Reads One Book. The art, fashion, dance, music, and food of Zorro's era will be celebrated at this unique event. Cost is $20 per person; call (562) 856-7586 or email mnaacp@gmail.com to reserve your spot now!
The full events calendar for Long Beach Reads One Book is here.
Apostrophe Books has copies of Zorro (in English and in Spanish) on sale every day for 10%! |
