Hello Everyone!

In January, we had a number of super-fun events with the parents, students, and teachers of Lowell Elementary!  We are honored and excited to work with such an enthusiastic group of book lovers!

January 20th, we helped host the annual Authors and Illustrators event at Lowell, where students had a chance to meet some of their favorite writers and illustrators, to ask questions and learn about the craft of making books. And the next day, the 21st, all of the authors and illustrators braved nasty weather to autograph their books and to meet fans of all ages at our store.

We have a wide selection of signed copies available for purchase in the store, all 10% off.  Even if you missed this very special event, you can still get an autographed copy of books by Lisa Yee, Bonnie Bright, Matt Beeuwsaert, Alva Sachs, Julie Jaskol, Brian Lewis, and Robin Preiss Glasser!

On January 24th, 25th, and 26th, we participated in Merchant Mentor Days.  Fourth graders from Lowell Elementary worked in our store, assisting customers and helping us with inventory and other chores around the shop.  Our helpers were so enthusiastic and so sharp that we can't wait until they are old enough to come work in our store full time!

Happy reading!

Best Helper Ever!
A special thank you to Maile!

Friday and Saturday, we had a very special helper, Maile, who made our jobs easier and even more fun!  While Maile's mom (illustrator Bonnie Bright) was conducting her workshop, Maile helped us inventory and set up our books.  When the workshops were over, she helped us sell books -- and no one could refuse to buy a book from such an enthusiastic bookseller!  At the store on Saturday, it was Maile who helped again with inventory and setting up the great book displays around the event table.

Thank you, Maile!  We couldn't have done it without you!

Merchant Mentor Days

Every year, as a part of a special Language Arts unit called "Dollars and Sense," fourth graders from Lowell Elementary work in participating shops and businesses along Second Street in Belmont Shore.  The students learn the ins and outs of their assigned business -- some kids learn how to bake dog snacks, others learn how to fit running shoes, some learn how to make keys.  At Apostrophe, our wonderful students practiced using the cash register, helped customers find books, wrapped purchases, and took book orders.  Most of all, they learned what we already know -- even though it is hard work, working in a bookstore is as fun as it looks!
