Newsletter February 1, 2012
|
Hello Everyone! Happy February! We've got a busy busy busy month ahead of us!
We have had great fun with the students, parents, and teachers of Lowell Elementary in the last two weeks, and we've got lots of great stories and pictures to share! So many, in fact, that we're going to do a separate newsletter just for them. Stay tuned to see pictures of the Author & Illustrator weekend and our super-helpful Merchant Mentors!
This newsletter has all of our upcoming events . . .
On February 4th, we'll be launching our dear friend Priscilla Maltbie's new book, Bambino and Mr. Twain. February 7th is the very first meeting of our Pre-Teen Book Club. We will be the bookseller at another great LBPLF event, an afternoon with novelist Lisa See, on February 11th. On February 25th, Medium Geof Jowett will be holding an event in our upstairs reading room. Be sure to get all the details below!
We are very excited to be a participant in this year's World Book Night! Check out the details below if you'd like to sign up to help us spread our love of reading and share books around Long Beach! The deadline to sign up is February 6th.
Valentine's Day is right around the corner! We have a gorgeous selection of cards and gifts, including some very special cards that were handmade in Long Beach! Hurry in for the best selection!

 Book Launch!
P.I. Maltbie's Bambino and Mr. Twain
On February 4th, from 2-4pm, Long Beach author Priscilla "P.I" Maltbie will visit Apostrophe Books to launch her latest delightful children's book, Bambino and Mr. Twain. In each of her books, Priscilla portrays historical figures in very private, very human moments: Claude Monet longs for his painting to captivate art critics as much as trains captivate his young son; a finicky cat inspires Picasso to move from his Blue Period to his Rose Period; and in this latest, a stubborn cat keeps Mark Twain company as he grieves for his late wife. Publisher's Weekly calls Bambino and Mr. Twain "unexpectedly moving." Priscilla's stories are rich with grace, wry humor, and, of course, mischievous cats. Don't miss this very special day with our great friend! All of Priscilla's books are 10% off at Apostrophe Books, and she will be very happy to sign copies. Come celebrate with us! |
 World Book Night
Register to be a BOOK GIVER by February 6th!
World Book Night is an annual celebration designed to spread a love of reading and books. Started last year in the UK, World Book Night will be celebrated this year on April 23, 2012, across the US, the UK, and Ireland. Tens of thousands of book lovers will hand out free World Book Night paperbacks! We love the idea of sharing books to encourage people to visit bookstores and libraries more often! Apostrophe Books has agreed to be a WBN book pickup bookstore. We will be hosting events for our Book Givers in April; we'll have more details when the date gets closer. So, we need Book Givers! A Book Giver will be asked to take a box of specially produced, not-for-resale paperback editions of popular books and distribute them to strangers -- or friends who aren't frequent readers. There are 30 titles on the list, a wide selection of poetry and fiction, ranging from The Kite Runner to The Hunger Games. Book Givers will take their WBN books to a coffee shop or hospital, church or community center, an after-work party or train home, shopping mall or local school -- and give out 20 free paperbacks. Please help us share our love of reading! Sign up here to be a Book Giver for us! The deadline to sign up is this Monday, February 6th, so don't delay! |
 Pre-Teen Book Club
First Meeting: February 7th at 4pm
Kids! Love reading? Love talking about books! Then you'll love our new book club for pre-teens (ages 8 to 12)!
We will have our very first meeting next Tuesday, February 7th, at 4 pm. Over pizza and beverages, we'll decide the first book we'll read, choose a name for our book club, and select the date of the next meeting. Be sure to bring some suggestions! Have at least 2 or 3 titles of books you loved or would love to read.
Space is limited, so please call (562.438.7950) or stop in the store to sign up! You'll also need parental permission to join.
Hope to see you there!
