Hello Everyone!

Happy holidays!

We are very, very merry at Apostrophe Books!  Author events and book fairs have added to the fun and chaos of our holiday season, and we wouldn't have it any other way!

And the store is busy, busy, busy!  We are so grateful to all of our customers, and we're honored that so many of you have chosen to do your holiday shopping in our store.  In these lean times, we know you have to choose carefully, and we deeply appreciate your business.

Books make the most thoughtful and personal gifts!  If we don't have your gift idea in stock, we can special order it for you -- most titles can be delivered to our store within 48 hours. Or, if we can't order it or you don't want to wait, our expert booksellers will be able to recommend another perfect book -- just ask!

Be sure to scroll down and check out the pictures from all of our recent events!  Our new upstairs reading room is working out beautifully -- you won't believe the before and after pictures.  The poetry reading with Ivy Dee was a wonderful way to christen the space!

Severe budget cuts have endangered the Hughes Middle School Library!  Scroll down for details to help us save the library!

If you haven't already signed up, ask about our Frequent Buyer's Club the next time you're in the store.  It's completely free to join, and the only information we need is your name: our system keeps track of your spending, and once you reach $100, you get a coupon for $5 off your next purchase!

Did you know that we offer e-books on our website? All of our e-books are designed for use with the FREE Blio app, which offers a wide selection of digital content.  Click here for more information on Blio and e-books!

Not ready to switch to an e-reader but like to order your books online?  Head over to www.apostrophebooks.net to browse our terrific selection of discounted books!

Happy reading!

New Reading Room!
A Labor of Love

Since we opened the store almost two years ago, the upstairs space above our store has been full of boxes and bookcases and inventory, and all this time, we've been planning to clean it up and get it ready for our special events.  Why we picked the busiest week of our busiest season to finally clear it out and spruce it up is beyond us, but we are so glad we did!

We're looking forward to hosting reading groups and author events in our new space --please email us if you have an idea for an event!  Stay tuned for announcements about all the fun things we already have planned for our gorgeous new room!

Booked! with Edward Humes
An LBPL Foundation event

Members and supporters of the Long Beach Public Library Foundation enjoyed a very special evening with Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Edward Humes on December 2nd.  Mr. Humes discussed his latest work, Force of Nature, giving attendees a new perspective on Wal-Mart and the green movement.

Signed copies of Force of Nature are available for 10% off at Apostrophe Books.

Poetry Reading
Ivy Dee - December 3rd

We had a great turnout for local poet Ivy Dee on Saturday, December 3rd.  Our newly painted reading room was a warm and inviting setting for an afternoon of poetry, wine and cheese, and conversation. Actress Zeljka Gortinski brought Ivy's beautiful words to life, and Ivy signed copies of her book and discussed her inspiration with guests.  It was a terrific afternoon --  the first of many such events in our reading room.

Ivy's collection of poetry, Blood and a Drop of Milk, is a beautifully crafted volume, with subtle and charming illustrations.  We have signed copies of the book available for 10% in the store.

Long Beach poet Ivy Dee (née Ivana Dostanic) is a new literary voice on the South Bay shores.  Born in Belgrade, Ms. Dee embraces both her Serbian background and her American home, and she bridges the two cultures with her poetry.  Her first collection of poetry, Blood and a Drop of Milk, debuted in Serbia to great critical acclaim; her second book, a collection of poetry for children, World of Butterflies and Stars, was also well-received.  Ms. Dee is a member of the Writers Guild of Serbia. She lives in Long Beach with her husband and two young daughters.

An Afternoon with Father Gregory Boyle
Tattoos on the Heart, December 10th

Father Greg Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries and author of Tattoos on the Heart, delivered an inspiring speech at the Main Library in Long Beach on December 10th.  Father Boyle signed copies of his book and visited with library supporters -- it was a successful benefit for both the library and Homeboy Industries.

Autographed copies of Tattoos on the Heart are 10% off at Apostrophe Books.  Proceeds from the sale of this book benefit Homeboy Industries.

Hughes Middle School Book Fair
Save the Hughes Library!

Deep budget cuts are threatening to close the library at Hughes Middle School.  Parents and teachers organized numerous fund-raising activities, and when they approached us for help, we were eager to do what we could.  The Book Fair, held in the school December 8th, 9th, and 10th, was a great success!

The Hughes Library still needs our help, though -- be sure to print and bring this flyer with you when you shop at Apostrophe Books in December, and we will donate a portion of your purchase to help keep the school library open!
