Book Review
Steve Jobs, by Walter Isaacson

Walter Isaacson, president of the Aspen Institute and the author of many acclaimed biographies, has just published a definitive new biography of Apple founder Steve Jobs.  This moving, well-written portrait of the computer visionary was two years in the making:  Isaacson conducted hundreds of interviews with Jobs' family, friends, colleagues, and competitors, including more than 40 interviews with Jobs himself.

Jobs cooperated with Isaacson as he wrote this book, but the result is an honest, and, at times, unflattering analysis of a man who shaped how the world consumes media. Whether you are a Mac or you are a PC, Steve Jobs' unique vision of marrying creative design with technology has changed how you interact with the world.  Isaccson's book tells the story behind that change, and it is a story that is as compelling as it is instructive.

Steve Jobs is available at Apostrophe Books for 10% the cover price -- it's selling fast, so hurry in to get your copy!

Long Beach Reads One Book
Zorro, by Isabel Allende

Every year, the Long Beach Public Library sponsors a One Book, city-wide reading event.  Long Beach Reads One Book encourages everyone in the city to read the same book, and to meet to discuss it in a variety of venues and formats. There will be activities geared for every reading level (elementary school students as well as high school and college students), plus events intended to include senior citizens and book clubs.

Isabel Allende's lively retelling of the Zorro legend is the perfect book for a city-wide read:  it is a page turner with something for everyone.  Set in California, the Caribbean, New Orleans, and Spain, this historical novel is jam-packed with adventure, intrigue, and romance. Allende's trademark wit, beautiful prose, and unforgettable characters are sure to have  the whole city talking!

Visit the LBPL One Book site for more details.  The first event for Long Beach Reads will take place in Spring 2012, and you can get your copy of Zorro now at Apostrophe Books for 10% off.

Walter the Farting Dog!
Haute Dog Howl'oween Parade in Belmont Shore

Apostrophe Books had a very special guest in the Haute Dog Parade last weekend: Walter the Farting Dog!  We put clothespins on our noses and marched with Walter, who competed with more than 500 other costumed dogs for a variety of prizes. Sadly, our pal Walter didn't win, but he and all the other puppies had fun in the park!

If you're a fan of Walter the Farting Dog (. . .  and who isn't!?), you can find all of William Kotzwinkle's fun, silly books at Apostrophe (all for 10% off, every day!).  We also have a "farting" Walter plush toy for sale -- it's just noisy, not stinky, we promise!

ArtWalk

To help celebrate Art in Long Beach, we participated in the Belmont Shore ArtWalk on October 22nd.  Our bookseller Michelle Sears, who is an accomplished artist, displayed her talents outside the store during the ArtWalk.  If you missed seeing her work during the show, Michelle's Etsy shop  has many original pieces for sale, and her work is also featured in Raw Artists.
