As a part of Arts Month in Long Beach, Belmont Shore is hosting an Art Walk on Second Street this Saturday, October 22nd! There will be a Sidewalk Art Contest, and local artists will be painting and drawing, as well as selling their original works. Our bookseller Michelle Sears will have a table in front of our store! Second Street will be very colorful on Saturday, October 22nd! The Art Walk will feature local artists demonstrating and selling their art, a Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest, and a Young Artist Art Contest. It's sure to be fun for the whole family, with arts and craft activities, face painting, and live music! Inside Apostrophe Books, we have artwork from local award-winning Young Artists on display -- make sure you stop in to see their creativity. While you're in, check out our eclectic art books, and add to your own collection! All art books are 10% to 60% off every day, with an additional 10% off this Saturday only! Our bookseller Michelle Sears will be demonstrating her art and selling her work in front of our  store all day Saturday! Michelle works in oil, watercolor, pastel, pen and ink -- anything that allows her to make her whimsical, colorful mark. All of her art, regardless of medium, captures her playful spirit and imaginative view of ordinary objects. Book Review In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berli, by Erik Larson
Fans of Erik Larson's Devil in the White City know that Larson has a magical touch when it comes to narrative nonfiction -- events and people spring to life on his pages.
Throughout In the Garden of Beasts, Larson uses his novelistic flair to relate the story of William Dodd, America's first Ambassador to Nazi Germany. Dodd, a history professor and an unlikely candidate for Ambassadorship, moves his family to Berlin in 1933. While Dodd struggles with his post in the New Germany, his grown daughter Martha parties and flirts her way around Berlin. As the atmosphere grows more tense and the city becomes dangerous, both father and daughter must reassess their behavior.
Knowing how the story ends does not diminish the suspense of this riveting narrative. The very personal stories of Martha and Dodd are complex and gripping, giving us a new understanding of a terrible time in human history.
