Apostrophe BooksApril 13, 2011

Hello Everyone!

As you can see from the photos above...we had quite the busy weekend!  First on Sat. April 2nd children's author Lisa Yee was at Apostrophe Books signing her newest book: WARP SPEED as well as her many other wonderful books!  Lisa's books are interesting to both boys and girls, so she has quite the following.  If you were unable to make it on Sat.  to her signing we have autographed copies still available - as you can see from this photo:

Then on Sunday, April 3rd author Joyce Dalman and illustrator Jamie Meckel  were at Apostrophe Books.  Joyce read her very sweet true story: Tillie and the Rabbit to many children (and their parents), and then both Joyce and Jamie autographed many copies.

If you were unable to attend this signing  we still have some autographed copies available  - be sure to get yours  before they're gone!

This coming Sunday, April 17th we have author and professor Liza Bakewell.  She will read and then sign her book: MADRE: Perilous Journeys with a Spanish Noun.   We hope you will join us!

This weekend is the Grand Prix and Apostrophe Books will have these Grand Prix specials:  10% off MADRE on Sunday during the signing from 2-3pm  Plus....TONS of books on sale throughout the store ALL WEEKEND!  You don't want to miss it!

LIFE, ON THE LINE
by Grant Achatz and Nick Kokonas

Grant Achatz is a critically acclaimed chef, winner of a James Beard Award and numerous others. His restaurant, Alinea, in Chicago is ranked one of the best in the country, if not the world. He is a pioneer in cooking, helping to the lead the way in the somewhat new field of molecular gastronomy. This book is the story of how he got to where he is today. It starts by describing his time working in his parent's restaurant in Michigan where at age 6 his job was to crack the eggs. He eventually advances to working under his amazing mentor Thomas Keller at the French Laundry in Napa Valley. Eventually he breaks out on his own to open Alinea, where he completely re-designs food and the experience one has while eating it. In short, this book was amazing. I found myself starving to death while reading the descriptions of the amazing meals he was creating. I was downright jealous as he described the 9-course Chef's tasting menu at The French Laundry. Every other review of this books seems to only focus on the fact that Chef Achatz was diagnosed with stage IV tongue cancer and survived, only to loose his sense of taste and eventually relearn how to taste. While that's an extremely interesting part of the book, it is only one piece of the puzzle. If you're a foodie, or enjoy memoirs, or are interested in someone surviving cancer, or just have the ability to read, then you have to read this. It won't disappoint.
