Banned Book Week
 (Sept. 26 - Oct. 2)

For as long as books have been published there has been disagreement over them: which are the best written, which are the most exciting and which, if any, should be kept from the public. In that spirit of discussion we celebrate Banned Book Week.

We at APOSTROPHE BOOKS support your right to read whatever you like and we support the author's right to freedom of speech through the written word.

Many books are petitioned for restriction or banning every year all across the country. This is especially true for children's books which are the most targeted though they are the best tools for teaching acceptance and critical thought to young minds. But it is writers themselves that often bear the burden most harshly. Amnesty International posts many cases of novelists, poets and journalists who find themselves and their readers persecuted for their provocative writing and unpopular tastes. These writers face the risk of imprisonment and physical harm or even execution. So, to show our solidarity with such groups as the ALA, the ABA,  the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression and the Library of Congress Center for the Book we will display many of the books that routinely make the Banned Book List. Everything from classics like Huckleberry Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird to modern bestsellers like the Harry Potter Series.

We do this in the hopes of sparking discussion and inspiring others to read and write often, well and with great variation because no book should be banned, no voice should go unheard.

AUTHOR SIGNING!!

Sat. Sept. 25th  from 1-3pm

Suzanne Tarbell Cooper : RMS Queen Mary Book and Postcards.

Please be sure to stop by the bookstore this Saturday, Sept. 25th from 1-3 to meet Suzanne and have a book signed. Suzanne will be joined by her co-authors..Frank Cooper, Don Lynch and Athene Mihalakis Kovacic.

Suzanne will also be signing her other titles as well, West Adams, Theatres in Los Angeles, Long Beach Art Deco and Los Angeles Art Deco.

Here's a little blurb about her latest book:  Launched in an era when speed and grandeur went hand in hand, the RMS Queen Mary is the last survivor of the golden age of ocean liners. From the time of her maiden voyage in 1936, passengers crossed the North Atlantic cocooned in luxury. Movie stars, tycoons, politicians, and royalty shared a ship with everyday people, for whom this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. During World War II, the Queen Mary ferried countless soldiers safely across the sea and, at war's end, carried their brides and babies home to America. Refurbished and polished to her previous glory, the Queen Mary continued to carry passengers until her final voyage to Long Beach in 1967. The RMS Queen Mary now serves as a floating hotel and tourist attraction, a living testament to her glamorous history, a generous showcase of art, and a magnificent example of a time when oceans could be crossed in both comfort and beauty.

And here's a little something about the authors joining us tomorrow! Suzanne Tarbell Cooper, Frank Cooper, Athene Mihalakis Kovacic, and John Thomas are board members of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles. Don Lynch is the best-selling author of Titanic--An Illustrated History. All photographs, unless otherwise specified, are from the Queen Mary Archives.

We look forward to hosting this signing tomorrow about a very famous part of history that all of us in Long Beach are so lucky to have in our own backyard!
