 NEW RELEASE

Soviet

The Pacifica Quartet attracted a great deal of attention for its 2010-11 performances of Dmitri Shostakovich's complete string quartets in New York, Chicago, and at the University of Illinois. The ensemble is reprising that cycle with a series of studio recordings for Cedille Records. The first in a four-part series,

The Soviet Experience: String Quartets by Dmitri Shostakovich and His Contemporaries, Volume I, available September 27, includes Shostakovich's String Quartets No. 5 in B-flat major, Op. 92; No. 6 in G major, Op. 101; No. 7 in F-sharp minor, Op. 108; and No. 8 in C minor, Op. 110; and Nikolai Miaskovsky's String Quartet No. 13 in A minor, Op. 86 (Cedille Records CDR 90000 127). The release is a two-CD set, priced as a single CD. The Pacifica's Shostakovich cycle for Cedille is unique in that it includes quartets by other notable Soviet-era composers. Future installments will offer Prokofiev's String Quartet No. 2, Moises Weinberg's String Quartet No. 6, and Alfred Schnittke's String Quartet No. 3 as companions to the Shostakovich quartets.

 ABOUT THE ARTISTS

performance pq

Recognized for its virtuosity, exuberant performance style, and often-daring repertory choices, the Grammy Award-winning Pacifica Quartet tours extensively worldwide. Named Musical America's 2009 Ensemble of the Year, the Quartet has gained international stature as one of the finest chamber ensembles performing today. Shortly after its 1994 formation, the Pacifica won the 1998 Naumburg Prize, and has since received many honors, including being appointed quartet-in-residence at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Quartet presented the monumental Shostakovich cycle in Chicago and New York during the 2010--2011 season, and in the summer of 2011, presented the complete Beethoven cycle at Tokyo's Suntory Hall in an unprecedented presentation of five concerts in three days. In 2011-2012, the Quartet will take the Shostakovich cycle to London's Wigmore Hall and will also perform the Beethoven cycle at The Met and for the Denver Friends of Chamber Music. The members of the Pacifica Quartet were appointed to the faculty of the University of Illinois in 2003 and serve as quartet-in-residence. They are also resident performing artists at the University of Chicago. For further information, click here
