The Gathering Inn
Women Helping Women                  October 27, 2011
Greetings!

This month when you gather to enjoy Thanksgiving with friends and family, take a moment to reflect on all the things for which you are grateful.

The most important practice you can develop for your health--body, mind, and spirit--is an attitude of gratitude. When you are focused on the blessings and beauty around you, your heart is open to receive the love and support the Universe and everything in it stands ready to shower upon you.

And while you are at it, have an extra piece of pumpkin pie!  (We've heard the calories don't count on Thanksgiving.)

Merry's Musings

Merry Cole in the Meditation Garden

You would have to have been living under a rock the last few weeks to not know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In fact, it seems we are being buried under a mountain of PINK! Pink ribbons, pink clothes, pink Styrofoam coffee cups, pink water bottles, pink everything--in fact, a local hair salon was offering pink hair extensions. At the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk this past Sunday (The Gathering Inn's team walked), there were even pink trash barrels. (Could it be so overdone now that it's gotten to be a cliché and lost it's meaning?)

As a 6-year breast cancer survivor myself, I am grateful that the world has awakened to the need to eliminate this dreadful disease, but there is so much more to living with, living through, or dying from breast cancer that all the pink merchandise and all the walks can't begin to get in touch with.

There is the phone call that says "Yes, even though there have been many scares in the past that have proven false, THIS time it IS cancer", followed by overwhelming and confusing prognosis and treatment options, which often lead to surgery, chemo, radiation, and the accompanying loss of privacy, dignity, and all that is familiar. A "new normal" becomes your way of life... doctors, hospitals, medications, wigs, nausea, fatigue, and uncertainty.
