ROCKING CHAIR ON THE PORCH!
SHADY PINES OR NOW?
YOUR CHOICE!

In the last few years of her life, whenever my mother would disagree with us or get "feisty" about something, my sister and I would tease her with the statement: "Better watch out or we'll send you to Shady Pines!". Shady Pines became our family's joke for the picture of an old woman sitting in her rocker on the porch of the "old folks home".

My mother transcended this life two years ago at age 90 but just last weekend as I got out MY rocking chair for the front porch at home, I thought about her and Shady Pines and smiled. My Mom was fortunate enough to never need to go to Shady Pines, but I did begin to think about the concept of slowing down and sitting on the porch in my rocking chair and just smelling the flowers, watching the birds slowly circle in the blue sky, and taking time for a few deep breaths and some even deeper thinking (or maybe just not thinking at all!). Maybe just BEING! What a concept!

And I vowed to myself that before it was time for ME to go to Shady Pines... and believe me, my children and grandchildren are beginning to give me "the look" that says they're thinking about it..., I would work now at creating those spaces in my life to sit in the rocking chair on the porch (figuratively or literally), take a break, and enjoy the moment.

And then I thought that because The Gathering Inn offers so many wonderful programs and classes and retreats for those who are seeking, maybe you don't know that you can also just come and sit in the rocking chair on our porch and soak in the tranquility and stillness of this beautiful place. Come for an afternoon, or overnight, without any particular agenda, just come and refresh your soul. Read a book, sip your tea, take a nap! There is no to-do list here, no guilt producing pile of laundry to fold, no e-mails or phones to answer, no time clock to punch, no errands to run... just fresh air to breathe, flowers to smell, an ever-ready cup of tea, and a rocker needing to be rocked.

Moon Circle Adventures
June 4th & 5th
Active by Nature has teamed up with The Gathering Inn and is offering "Moon Circle Adventures". A guided outdoor adventure and workshop.

For the "Bike & Hike" segment of this program, we'll explore the vast maze of old roads by bicycle, as we make our way to a truly amazing overlook of the Quabbin Reservoir. We'll learn the history of the area, hike to a panoramic view, stop along the waters edge for lunch as we take pleasure in the pristine wilderness that surrounds us.

The workshop portion of this trip will focus on the cycles of the moon, the cycles of the seasons, and how they relate to women's life cycles. One of the best ways to get in touch with the rhythm of those cycles is to use our bodies and our senses to get in touch with Nature, to see what we are capable of.

Join us for a fun filled weekend!

The Intensive Journaling Workshop

June 11th - 13th

During this workshop, Ms. Kracke-Lambert will be presenting her experience of working with a journaling technique established in the 1970's by Psychologist Ira Progoff.  Dr. Progoff studied extensively under C. G. Jung and the Jungian understanding greatly influences this technique.
You will learn new tools for observing and connecting to the inner movement of your whole life history and see patterns of behavior that you may want to keep or not.  You will begin to understand the gift of your own life and the experiences that have shaped it and how that can be of value as you move forward into your future.

Ahab's Wife:
Or, The Star-Gazer: A Novel

May 23rd at 9:30am

Please join us Sunday, May 23rd for the start of our  discussion of Ahab's Wife: Or, The Star-gazer: A Novel by Sena Jeter Naslund. We'll be reading this book throughout the summer. For May we'll be talking about the opening of the book through page 173 to the end of Chapter 29.

Una Spenser's marriage to Captain Ahab is certainly a crucial element in the narrative of Ahab's Wife, but the story covers vastly more territory. After a spellbinding opening scene, the tale flashes back to Una's childhood in Kentucky; her idyllic adolescence with her aunt and uncle's family at a lighthouse near New Bedford; her adventures disguised as a cabin boy on a whaling ship; her first marriage to a fellow survivor who descends into violent madness; courtship and marriage to Ahab; life as mother and a rich captain's wife in Nantucket; involvement with Frederick Douglass; and a man who is in Nantucket researching his novel about his adventures on her ex-husband's ship. ~ from ReadingGroupGuides.com

Volunteer Opportunities

House Painting Party:
May 22nd and 23rd. If you think you can be a part of helping to paint the house, please let us know so we have enough supplies on hand.

Get on the Volunteer List:
The Marketing Team and the Facilities Team are both looking to create a list of volunteers they can call when a need arises for specific, periodic tasks such as setting up for a workshop, joining a painting party, distributing fliers to local businesses, stuffing envelopes, cleaning the studio or the house, researching potential client markets on line, or shopping for chocolate (HA!  Got ya!)
Please email the office if we can add your name to the list (you will always have the gracious right to say no when we call.)
Lending Library

Our new library is now organized, cataloged and available for lending.
Lending times are during office hours, typically Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday, 9:30am to 4:40pm. It's to call ahead and make sure though!

Look for upcoming reviews of books in our collection.

If you have books you would like to donate to our Library, please do not just put them on the shelves, please bring them to the office so that Bev can log them in first.

Thank you to our librarian, Bev Heath, for all her work!
Potluck/Drumming Circle

May 12th at 6:30PM
The April Potluck was followed by a drumming circle as a form of meditation.  Those in attendance were so enthusiastic about the benefits and joys of drumming that we will continue to include drumming at least for the next few months.
If you have drummed before, you know how wonderful it is.  If you haven't, perhaps now is the time to give it a try.  You don't need any experience, musical ability, or your own drum.  Just come and connect to the wisdom and rhythm of the ancient time when women were the drummers.

Expanding Our Outreach

The Gathering Inn is looking to expand our outreach to a variety of women's groups, including... but not limited to... women clergy, holistic health practitioners, women's circles, organizations supporting caregivers, and church women's groups.
We want to know how we can best support women in their particular mission and work.  If you know of anyone who could benefit from having  like-minded women to share their journey, please let us know.
Our Affiliates

Each of these affiliated businesses are independent of The Gathering Inn, however they also offer their practices and programs at and through the Inn. Their missions and purposes are in alignment with the mission and purpose of The Gathering Inn, to promote total health and wellness through various modalities, particularly for women.
