Quo vadis, World Trade?
For several decades we have witnessed wide swings of the pendulum characterizing world trade and its cousin, international shipping. At times we wonder why supply (space) and demand (cargo) cannot be synchronized. Globalization allows half of the world to thrive while the other half is in desperate need of a "stimulus injection". In times past demand could be enhanced and expanded by clever marketing in consumer countries. When the spigot dries up and banks stop giving away "freebees" the result shows up negatively for the shipping industry. Yet those too timid to look ahead and take calculated risks can be easily swept away by a new gigantic wave. There is no viable alternative to continued investment and commitment.

Did you know?
The Iraqi Ministry of Transport is planning the development of a new deep water container/general cargo port at Al-Faw. The first phase is expected to take about 3 years to complete. The start date for this project has not been released.
At the same time, Kuwait has announced plans to build a new port on Boubyan Island, just a few kilometers away from Umm Qasr and the site of Iraq's Al Faw port project. Iraq fears the loss of business to this new Mubarak Port, which is projected to be completed by 2016. This situation is causing new tensions between these two neighboring states.
Orion Marine Corp handles cargo to Umm Qasr on a regular basis. Please contact us for assistance with your transportation needs to Iraq and other ports and points in Middle East.
