Issue 10
...the birds of the air can perch in its shade. Mark 4:30-32

Greetings!

"Hello" and "Thank You" for subscribing to our e-newsletter!

I absolutely love Minnesota!

The change of seasons is perfect for someone like me that gets easily bored.  Although it can be sad to see summer fade away, fall is my favorite time of year...I love the cool breezes, the fantastic sunrises and sunsets, the huge harvest moon, and the amazing beauty as the leaves turn, representing every color imaginable.  It's interesting to me that the death of those leaves can be so beautiful...

Although I hadn't planned on making a spiritual analogy, it seems like a great opportunity to point out that death can indeed be a good thing, a great thing, an eternal thing.  When we accepted Christ's death on our behalf, He took away our sin and made us white as snow!  When we die to sin (a daily death for one such as me), our lives are renewed and restored!   For the new believer, the old has gone, the new has come, and all the angels in heaven rejoice!  Yes, death can indeed be good.

Although I'm not ready to die just yet (I believe God has a lot more work planned for me), I do look forward to heavenly rest.  Until such time, please join me in making the most of this life for our eternity to come...don't miss an opportunity to soak up God's goodness, to share His love, and to tell others about His grace.

Each of us can pass on a curse or a blessing, and as Joshua said, choose this day who you will serve... as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord!

Carpe diem for Christ!

Enjoy the fall,

Feature: Fall Color

Fall Color
The trees are showing their brilliant yellow, red and orange color, cooler nights are taming the mosquitoes and the lakes and ponds "steam" as if they are giant hot tubs.

I love to gather around our fire pit sharing stories with my family and friends, enjoying a cup of warm cocoa and making s'mores with a perfectly cooked marshmallow!  Some of our best family times have occurred when we gather around the fire and talk until the wee hours of the morning...sometimes, we don't retire until our eyelids begin to shut without permission, forcing us to get some sleep just so we can do it again the next night!

If you don't have a fire pit, you are really missing something.  If you have ever wondered how to fit one into your space, the nice part of a fire pit is that it can be built to any location, whether flat or hilly. The standard method is to leave a three foot in diameter space in the middle of a patio, which can be ground level or raised with boulders or retaining wall block. Another option is to install a gas burner that works without the need for wood. If you just want to add a cool outdoor kitchen, a gas fired flame with glass in a dish will be a great addition to any landscape.  To see an example, stop by The Mustard Seed to see our outdoor kitchen complete with a patio warmer, a bubbling basalt column, a wine bar and a grill large enough for the whole neighborhood!

If you already have a patio, you can easily add a fire pit that is "dug in" to the existing patio, located next to it, or you can just use a portable fireplace that can be moved from place to place as you desire.  Whatever you decide, get outside and enjoy the beautiful fall evenings...believe it or not, our first snow shower may only be a few short weeks away!

The BuzzWhat's Providing the Color

Pumpkins and GourdsIn addition to all the trees, Burning Bush is turning flame red, Tiger Eyes Sumac is reddish orange and many grasses are turning golden yellow. A few remaining bloomers include Asters and Golden Rods.  To add a quick hit of color for a party or expand an existing garden, stop by and pickup some mums, kale and grasses. Pumpkins and straw bales are also available for outdoor decorations.

Patio with Fire pit and Grasses

Chilton patio with fire pit

This project was a great example of creating a beautiful outdoor room that peaks during fall. The client loves to entertain, but did not have a great fall space with a fire pit to extend the evening into night. Upon discussing ideas with the client, The Mustard Seed designed and built a beautiful half-circle boulder wall into a hillside to frame a limestone circle patio and fire pit. A path with limestone steps descends to the space through a flowing garden of grasses and perennials.
