Issue 9
...the birds of the air can perch in its shade. Mark 4:30-32

Greetings!

"Hello" and "Thank You" for subscribing to our e-newsletter!

As we prepare to send our kids back to school, I can't help but reflect upon this past summer.  We had one of the best vacations of our life when we visited Deer Valley Ranch, a Christian "dude ranch", nestled into the mountains of Colorado.  Our family enjoyed a time of sweet fellowship as we soaked up God's amazing creation, in awe of His majesty!

As is often the case, however, interspersed among the good times were also some hard times.  As I reflected upon some of the trials, the most significant is related to the economy.  Although our spring was the best ever, this summer has been agonizingly slow, a real test of our trust in God's provision.  We have total faith in God to see us through, in fact, His power is often more obvious to us in the hard times, miraculously providing for us time and again.  Thinking about this, though, has caused me to reflect upon a number of verses in James.

In James 4:2(b)-3, we are told that we don't have because we don't ask God; we are reminded that sometimes we don't receive because we ask with wrong motives.  In James 1:6 we are also reminded that when we ask, we must also believe in God's ability to provide.  Having seen and experienced the living God in my own life over and over again, I believe the Bible is true, every single word of it inspired by the Holy Spirit.  I believe it is applicable to our lives yesterday, today and tomorrow, that it is our roadmap to real success, things eternal, not temporal.

With these verses and belief in mind, I humbly ask that you consider supporting us by buying your landscape and garden center products from us.  If you have a landscape project in mind, I humbly ask that you consider having us do the work or provide the materials.  If you know a friend who needs help with a design, I humbly ask that you refer them to us or us to them.

Yes, I am asking for your help and support, but it is not for my glory.  I hope my life will attest to the power of God, that I will be a faithful servant, that someday I will hear Jesus Himself say, "Well Done!"  I have learned not to confuse success with victory or failure with defeat, for, as followers of Christ, our victory is assured and we cannot be defeated!!!

I thank God for His past provision for us through you and I thank Him in advance for the provision that will come.  I also thank you, for without you, we would have no business whatsoever...you are the reason we exist, thank you for your support!

Sincerely,
Mark D. Halla

Feature: Trees - The Investment that Grows

B&B Trees
Trees are one of the most important additions to any landscape since people quickly judge the age and value of a neighborhood by the quantity, type and age of trees.  Here is an overview to help you choose your next investment.

Shade Trees
Shade trees include Maple, Oak, Ash, Honeylocust, Elm, and many more. Generally, it is a tree that gets at least forty to sixty feet tall so it also provides a broad shade canopy. If you want to add some privacy or shade near the house, make sure to plant it at least 20 to 30 feet from the foundation to protect the house and allow the tree to naturally grow without trimming.

Ornamental Trees
Ornamental trees usually include ones that flower and don't grow taller than twenty feet. They are great additions to spaces near the front entrance and corners since the smaller size helps bring your eye level down from a two story plus height to a more welcoming one story height.  To choose the right tree, first consider light and moisture conditions, and then think about whether you would like flowers in the spring or vibrant leaf color in the fall.

Evergreens
Evergreens are a great tree to add since they provide interest and privacy during the summer and winter in addition to providing a great wind break. The most common types are Blue Spruce, Black Hills Spruce, and Arborvitae. Some other varieties include Blue Arrow Juniper, White Pine, Mugho Pine, and Bald Cypress. If the space is quite shady, then plant a yew.

Steamboat Days ParadeLook for The Mustard Seed in the  Carver Steamboat Days Parade Sept. 12th & at some local schools planting trees as a part of Green for Life Tree Plantings campaign (with the MN Landscape Association) on Sept 16th.
It is hard to believe with the hot temperatures, but Steamboat Days is almost upon us. Come down to the parade on September 12th at 1pm to enjoy the candy and cheer on our float.
On September 16th, the Mustard Seed is participating in a statewide day of service by MN Landscape Association members called "Green for Life". We will be planting a Northwoods Red Maple at East Union Elementary, Chaska Elementary, and Victoria Elementary along with the help of many students.

Crew Spotlight
The Jonathan Project:

Jonathon ProjectThis project took place throughout the Jonathan Association, a community of twenty-two neighborhoods that began in 1967 as a planned community in Chaska. The main portion of the project added vibrant season long color to each of the twenty-two neighborhood signs along Bavaria Road, Hundertmark and Pioneer Trail with roses, grasses and perennials. The Mustard Seed also added new color to the association's office at the Karen House off Bavaria Road and great fall color from Joe Pye Weed at the obelisk round-about by Clover Ridge Elementary. In addition to new plantings, maple trees were planted along boulevards and in parks throughout the community.
