2012 ChesapeakeMan Endurance Festival News The 2012 ChesapeakeMan Endurance Festival on Maryland's Eastern Shore is just a few weeks away on September 29, 2012, and includes four top shelf events for all skill levels.
The Ultra Distance has been named a "140.6 Best Race," in Triathlete Magazine's March, 2010 edition, and is the USAT Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship event. The Aquabike encompasses a 2.4-mile Swim in Hambrooks Bay and 112 miles of cycling through the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The race finishes at the transition area where the full distance ChesapeakeMan competitors will continue on with the run. The Skipjack Triathlon features a 1.2 mile swim, 64 mile bike on the first loop of the Ultra Distance course, and a 10 mile run. Finally, the Bugeye Classic Intermediate Triathlon consists of a 1.2 mile swim followed by a a 25 mile bike through portions of the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge and a 6.2 mile flat run.
We are pleased to welcome Mid-Atlantic college students to the Bugeye Classic which is part of the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Triathlon Conference 2012-2013 Race Series. The 2012-13 MACTC series will serve as qualification for the 2013 Collegiate Nationals in April. Teams will compete in at least two series races and the MACTC Championship at Rev3 Half Full in order to earn Nationals slots.
Last but not least, the ChesapeakeMan Endurance Festival will benefit Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic. All funds raised by Make-A-Wish competitors will directly support granting wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions in Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia.
Make-A-Wish helps children like Antonio. Antonio is a musically talented 12-year-old from Washington D.C. who loves to play instruments. Since Antonio never had any instruments of his own, he often used a friend's or his church's instruments. However, after being diagnosed with leukemia and stuck in hospitals, he wasn't able to travel to play music for a long time. When he found out his wish would be granted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid Atlantic, he asked for none other than his very own band set. Antonio received an electric-blue Pearl drum set, a blue Fender bass guitar and blue lead guitar, a keyboard and three amps. Undoubtedly, his favorite color is blue! In addition, the Foundation surprised him with a laptop set up with recording software and digital keyboard. Antonio's parents, three siblings and grandfather came together for the wish party at his house where he was presented with all of his new instruments. Antonio showed off his talents by jamming on the guitar with his grandfather and brother. Antonio has not forgotten what it was like to not have his own instruments, so he gives back by sharing his instruments with his family and friends. His passion for music has gotten him through the hard times and has helped him get better as he is now in remission!
Registration will be open for about another week, so don't delay!

TriColumbia Athlete and Cancer Survivor BethAnn Telford Is Going to Kona! Congratulations to Bethann Telford, TriColumbia athlete, friend and brain cancer survivor who will be going to Kona to compete in the 2012 Ironman Championship through a new Ironman program called Kona Inspired in which athletes and fans had the chance to vote for the most inspiring, determined and dedicated athletes to get the chance to race in Kona.
Since 2005, with grit and determination, Bethann has battled her illness while continuing to train and compete in triathlons and marathons including The Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon, Ironman 70.3 EagleMan, the Marine Corp Marathon and Ironman Lake Placid. She refuses to give up! She has fought back not only by racing, but has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for brain cancer research through her own organization, TeamBT.
Recently Bethann has taken a young girl from her hometown, Anya, also battling brain cancer, under her wing. She and Anya were at the Athleta Iron Girl Columbia finish line on August 19th encouraging other survivors racing as part of Team Inspiration. Team Inspiration is compiling air miles so that Anya and her mother can go to Kona with Telford to watch her compete. Bethann will be racing for all those suffering with brain cancer, especially the children, and Team Inspiration also plans to make a lei for Bethann with the names of children suffering with cancer, for whom she will be racing.
TriColumbia wishes Bethann Telford much luck as she competes at the Ironman World Championship this fall!

Home Based Strength Training for Kids Dr. Jordan Metzl, MD recently launched a joint project with the American Academy of Pediatrics on the Today Show called Home Based Strength Training for Young Athletes which encourages parents to train, and hopefully train with, their kids at home. The goal is to keep young athletes on the field instead of on the sidelines. The workout is designed for athletic children and teens between the ages of 8 and 18. The benefits of youth strength training include stronger muscles, stronger bones, and a lessened risk of injury.
Dr. Metzl is a 17-time TriColumbia Ironman 70.3 EagleMan athlete, nationally known sports medicine physician at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and author of the best selling new book, The Athlete's Book of Home Remedies.
