2012 Columbia Triathlon A Huge Success
The Columbia Triathlon, one of the longest running triathlons in the Mid-Atlantic now in its 28th year, took place on May 20th with the largest field ever! Thanks and congratulations to all the finishers and award winners. The sold out event is truly a "rite of spring," officially opening up TriColumbia's Triathlon Season. Congratulations to all our finishers and award winners. This was the best Columbia Triathlon yet! The weather was spectacular as we welcomed nearly 2000 endurance athletes and 40 professionals, ages 14 - 71 from 28 states and 5 countries!
28-year-old Cameron Dye of Australia (living in Boulder, Colorado) won the men's division, setting a new course record of 1:49:41. Andrew Yoder, the 2011 Champion and previous course record holder came in second. 30 year-old Annabel Luxford from Australia was the top female finisher with a time of 2:06:18. Check out all the pro and age group results on our website.
"The course is one of the most beautiful, and also one of the most challenging, I have ever competed on," said Cameron Dye. "The TriColumbia staff and volunteers put on a great race and I am excited to add this event to my resume."
"Triathlon is a great sport and this race was a lot of fun," said Annabel Luxford. "The course was one of the toughest I have run, but the support throughout was amazing."
Local triathlete, Suzy Serpico who has participated as an age group athlete for years at The Columbia Triathlon, made her appearance this year as a pro and finished in 10th place. She qualified for her USAT Pro card at last year's event.
The day was full of inspiration from charity teams and from individuals who have overcome adversity. Ahtletes Serving Athletes assisted Shane Lauer, a student athlete at Dulaney High School who suffers from Duchene Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Because of this degenerative diesase, Shane is confined to a wheelchair yet he still competes in many multisport events including three full marathons, three half Ironman distance triathlons and two sprint triathlons. He is the first person with Duchene Muscular Dystrophy to finish at the Columbia Triathlon!
Sarah and Hector Daken of Poolesville, MD. competed as a relay team. 5 years ago, Sarah never would have imagined she would be here today participating in an Olympic Distance run with professional athletes. This is because at that time Sarah weighed over 400 lbs and suffered chronic back pain, insecurities and fear. Now, she has lost over 175 lbs and has maintained that weight loss for over three years. Her mantra of "Intention.Decision. Attention" continues to inspire her on her incredible weight loss journey. Sarah told us, "The Columbia Triathlon is very significant for me because it is symbolic of my finally reaching a milestone I never thought I would reach."
This year, The Columbia Triathlon was chosen as a 5150 qualifying event. The top 15 in each age group are invited to race at the 2012 5150 Hy-Vee U.S. Championship on September 2, 2012 in Des Moines, Iowa. In addition, those finishing in the top 5 in each age group are offered complementary entries into the 2012 5150 Hy-Vee U.S. Championship. Congratulations to all those that qualified!
Once again, The Columbia Triathlon is Marylandʼs Designated Qualifier Race for The Best of the U.S Amateur Triathlete Competition. Congratulations to Lucas McCollum and Jennifer Thackston who were the top amateur athletes from MD.
