Brian Boyle Iron Heart Cover
Brian Boyle's Story At 2010 Ironman 70.3 EagleMan Triathlon To Air On Maryland Public Television in February

On July 6, 2004, 18-year-old Brian Boyle was driving home from swim practice, when a dump truck speeding through an intersection T-boned the car he was driving. The former swimmer and bodybuilder suffered massive internal injuries, losing 60 per cent of his blood. His heart was actually knocked to the other side of his chest. To manage the severe trauma, medical staff had to put him in a chemical-induced coma which lasted two months.

Doctors predicted that if Boyle survived he would be in a vegetative state. And they said that if he did manage to regain consciousness and use of his mental faculties, he would likely have to live out his life under full-time nursing care.

Boyle aka "Iron Heart" has proved those doctors wrong. He fought his way back and not only recovered, but just 30 months later, he competed in the Ironman World Championship in Kona, finishing the race in just 14 hours, 42 minutes.

Click here to view a video about Brian's incredible story produced by NBC in conjunction with his participation in the 2008 Ironman 70.3 Championship in Clearwater.

Having received more than 36 blood transfusions following his accident, Brian is a spokesman for the American Red Cross inspiring young people, advocating for blood donation and holding blood drives. He was honored by  the American Red Cross as Spokesman Of The Year for 2009 and 2010 for his work.

We are proud to have had Brian compete in the 2010 Ironman 70.3 EagleMan Triathlon, captured by Maryland Public Television (MPT.) His miraculous and courageous story of personal determination has been featured in the media and is the subject of his book "Iron Heart."  MPT's feature story, "Iron Heart" which was filmed at the 2010 EagleMan 70.3 will air on February 22, 2011 at 7:30 PM on Maryland Public Television's Outdoors Maryland program.
