FOUNDATION FOCUS: "GOT SKIN? GET CHECKED! "...& Often!" as the title emphasizes for triathletes. Melanoma skin cancer "detection" is one essential component of the mission of the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation (JMNMF) - to protect the body's largest, perhaps most underappreciated organ from its number one enemy - the sun! Skin cancer is the #1 cancer in the U.S. and melanoma is the most serious and lethal form. The Foundation is a non-profit charity recognized nationally for education, outreach and research activity, and especially, as the "voice for melanoma prevention, detection, care and cure."
Triathletes lead the pack as a key demographic for over-exposure to the sun's extremely harmful ultraviolet rays. When you think of skin cancer you may ask, "What's the big deal? Don't they just remove it?" While the skin has pigment-producing melanocytes to protect it, the sun's rays are especially damning to the skin's middle layer, the dermis.

ONE MAN'S VIEW OF AQUABIKE EVENTS
by Chris Coffin
3 years ago I reinvented myself. No, I didn't change my name and move to a different part of the country. I didn't sell all of my possessions and take up a new occupation. I was forced to reinvent myself as an athlete.
In 1987 I began my NCAA Division I swimming career at Providence College. During that time I began competing in USLA lifeguard events such as the distance surf paddle and the lifeguard ironman. I transitioned to open water masters swimming and in 1991 I entered my first triathlon. I was instantly hooked on the multi-sport lifestyle. Unfortunately due to poor bio-mechanics and bone structure in my foot and ankle, 16 years of triathlon training and racing had taken its toll. I developed a degenerative condition where my posterior tibialus tendon began to come apart. No, it did not simply tear in half (that would be too easy), it began to shred, break down and come apart like an over cooked pot roast. I went through almost 3 years of repetitive cycles; injury, therapy, crutches, casts, boots, getting better, racing again and re-injuring. Finally after meeting with 3 different sports orthopedists, I was told by each one separately that "I should give up running" or face major tendon replacements, bone grafting, titanium inserts, even having my heel bone cut off and screwed back on into a new position.

IRONMAN CHAMPIONSHIP LOTTERY CLOSES FEB 28
A
mainstay in the history of the Ironman, the Ironman Lottery began in
1983 thanks to the vision of one of Ironman's founders, John Collins,
as a way to provide athletes of all abilities the opportunity to be
part of the world's most challenging one-day endurance event. The 2010
Ironman Lottery Program officially opened on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009 and
will close on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. PT with all winning
entries being announced on Thursday, April 15 at Noon ET.
The
Ford Ironman World Championship selects 200 athletes each year to
participate through the Ironman Lottery. A total of 150 athletes will
be selected domestically and 50 athletes will be selected
internationally. The Ford Ironman World Championship is one of the most
in-demand athletic events in the world. Qualifying becomes more
competitive each year, so the Ironman Lottery offers another
opportunity to participate in this incredible event.
In
1990, Ironman established the Passport Club domestically as an addition
to the Ironman Lottery. This year, the Passport Club was opened to
athletes worldwide. The Passport Club offers many benefits, including
an increased chance of being selected through the lottery.
A FAQ is available on the Ironman website or e-mail Lottery@ironman.com.
Entry Fee: Lottery Application: $40 USD Passport Club Membership: $50 USD (second chance into the Lottery)
