A Message from Board Member John Hood
United Way. What does it mean to me? Why do I support it?
I recall many years ago when the United Giver's Fund was formed in Rutherford County to consolidate all the charity fund drives into one, providing convenience and reducing the effort from many drives and campaigns. Further, it simplified the process for businesses. Much of that has taken place, and the United Giver's Fund has evolved over the years into what is now the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties.
To answer my own question, we give and work for United Way because it provides a way to support 44 worthy agencies in our community which contribute to the quality of life. Knowing that one out of three residents receive help from one or more of these agencies each year makes me even more aware of the importance of giving to our United Way. If each household in our community would give $50 we could raise as much as $6 million, which would allow us to help even more agencies in need of our support.
I urge everyone to make a gift this year, large or small, so we can reach our goal of $3 million. If your workplace doesn't conduct a campaign, please call the United Way office (893-7303), and someone will be in touch to make your fellow workers aware of what United Way does.
We have a wonderful community and there are so many who need help and assistance from time to time. United Way is a great way to help your neighbors and make this a better place in which to live and work.

LiveUnited MTSU
LIVEUNITED MTSU announces "Dorm Wars" benefitting Nurses for Newborns. The student organization, which is brand new this year at MTSU, is collecting items for a Nurses for Newborns "baby shower" that will benefit moms in need throughout the community. LIVEUNITED MTSU placed boxes in different dorms around MTSU's campus to collect items like bottles, blankets, baby clothes, or anything that could be beneficial to a mom in need. The collection will take place through November 8, and the dorm which collects the most items for Nurses for Newborns will win! For any questions concerning LIVEUNITED MTSU, please contact the organization's president, Ashley Diffenderfer at

2010 Opryland Hotel Hall of Trees
Every year around the third week of November, Gaylord Opryland Hotel presents A Country Christmas®.
This world-famous event includes the Radio City Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes, ICE! featuring Santa Claus is Coming to Town , Louise Mandrell's "The Gift" Christmas Dinner & Show, and the Hall of Trees.
The Hall of Trees is an event that raises money for local charities and is a part of the Winter Wonderland area featuring photos with Santa, Treasures for the Holidays Craft Show, Holiday Kids Train and Gingerbread Corner. Gaylord Opryland considers the Hall of Trees a staple to their A Country Christmas line-up, and because of the generosity of all those who participated in 2009, thousands of dollars were raised for charitable organizations here in Middle Tennessee. In fact, 38 charities participated, more than $44,000 was generated, and 21,000 visitors were in attendance at this event.
The United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties has been offered the opportunity to present a tree and a 10 X 10 space showcasing our 44 partner agencies. As a result, United Way invites all partner agencies to create an ornament (or up to 5 ornaments) for the tree reflecting their agency. Feel free to use photographs, agency logos, etc. The collected ornaments will be used to decorate the tree and provide insight into that agency's impact in the community. The ornaments are due no later than November 5, 2010, and we ask that all ornaments incorporate the signature United Way colors as follows: royal blue, red or gold.
An auction will run onsite from November 19, 2010, through December 20, 2010, with the online portion becoming available approximately November 19, 2010. The winning bidder for
each tree will be awarded the ornaments and any gifts.
If you need additional information, please contact Eric Kingsley or Meagan Flippin at 615-893-7303.

Campaign Corner
State Farm
State Farm partners with the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties each year to raise funds that will support agencies and programs that have proven to create sustained change in the lives of many individuals and families within our community. The 2010 Murfreesboro Operation Center's United Way Campaign began October 4 and runs through October 29.
Employees have the opportunity to give a one-time or bi-weekly donation. Even two dollars a paycheck can provide eight meals for the hungry. All contributions are voluntary, and no gift is too small as every dollar makes a difference.
Throughout the campaign, State Farm will host a variety of events which include a balloon sale, jail and bail, mall day/Books R Fun, bake sale and silent auction. Each week, every associate receives a free snack simply by showing their completed pledge form.
State Farm employee contributions will create meaningful and lasting changes in the lives of those who need help the most.
