A Message from the President & CEO |
The news is now reporting that the recession was over 18 months ago! I'm not sure if the general public is buying into the good news, as many reports still show the American public is being very reserved with their spending. The agencies that your United Way funds are not seeing great reductions in their needs; in fact, the requests have increased. This may be a reflection of the overall attitude on spending and job creation. With this said, we are in the middle of your United Way campaign and wondering whether we should be optimistic or should we retreat? This community has the answer, and based on all the good news we are seeing, I believe Rutherford and Cannon Counties has a lot to be proud of. For example, General Mills just announced an expansion, Nissan has the new "Leaf" project coming out of the ground, the Rutherford County Chamber just completed a very successful membership drive, and unemployment for our area has dropped to 8.6%. This is not an economics lesson, nor do I profess to be an economic analyst, but I know good news when I hear it. We do have good news to share from your United Way as well. The campaign has energy we have not seen in a while. This is good because the needs are many for this community. As we move into the middle part of the campaign, it is important to understand that it takes everyone doing his or her part to make this a success. Success is not the dollars raised, but the needs met! If every home in our community of Rutherford and Cannon Counties reflected a $50.00 investment, we would not only met the needs, we could add additional partner agencies. I hope you will see the need and join in on this great opportunity to make a difference for a child, senior adult, or maybe a friend or neighbor in need. Your community needs you!

LiveUnited MTSU
United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties is proud to welcome a new student chapter of United Way from Middle Tennessee State University. The student organization, LiveUnited MTSU, was started after interest last year by a few MTSU students following United Way's Day of Action. The students did projects for Project H.E.L.P. on MTSU's campus and decided to become an official student organization. This fall will mark LiveUnited MTSU's first semester on campus, and there has already been an exciting amount of interest in the organization. LiveUnited MTSU held their first meeting on campus on Monday, September 27th with about twenty MTSU students interested in joining the organization. The group will focus on providing students opportunities to volunteer with United Way's 44 partner agencies while creating exposure of United Way to students at MTSU. The president of LiveUnited MTSU is Ashley Diffenderfer, the Vice President is Donald Ables, Recruitment Chair is Hillary Osborne, the secretary is Katie Kelley, the Treasurer is Michael Nanney, and the Service Relations chair is Brittany Stewart. | | |
