Nurses for Newborns
Agency Fights to Reduce Infant Mortality & Strengthen Families

Tennessee has some of the poorest rankings for women and infant health in the nation. Nurses for Newborns battles these issues and brings hope to babies and families with their hands-on approach. Nurses for Newborns is a registered nurse, home visitation program dedicated to reducing infant mortality by providing healthcare, parenting skills and support to at-risk families. Their programs focus on helping medically fragile babies, teen parents and mothers who are mentally or medically challenged.
With the assistance of the United Way, their highly experienced nurses are able to provide assessments, support, education, healthcare and other critical services that may not otherwise be available. Nurses for Newborns programs help ensure babies' well-being and safety, while empowering parents to become safe, confident caregivers who know how to monitor growth and health of their baby and where to access help if needed.
Nurses for Newborns began serving Tennessee in 2001 with the help of Kim and Fred Miller, former TN Titan. They currently serve families in more than seven Middle TN counties. In the 2009 fiscal year, Nurses for Newborns of Tennessee provided over 4,600 RN home visits.

A Note from the 2010 Campaign Chair |
It's Campaign time! Your United Way staff and many service-minded volunteers have been organizing, training, and making preparations for the 2010 United Way Campaign. Being privileged to serve as this year's Campaign Chair, much of my responsibility thus far has been assembling the team that will serve as our 2010 Cabinet, and boy am I excited about this team! We have twenty-one volunteers from all walks of life, including ten Loaned Executives from local business who share one thing in common, a passion for service to our communities in Rutherford and Cannon counties. Thanks to Publix, State Farm, First Bank, Regions Bank, Sun Trust Bank, Rich Products and General Mills for committing Loaned Executives this year.
Did you know that one in three of our residents benefitted from services delivered by our partner agencies in the past year? Unfortunately, many of our friends, neighbors, and co-workers had additional needs that went underserved because we were unable to meet an additional $1million in agency requests last year. To me, this is the most compelling reason to give my time and treasure to United Way - to help those in need right here in our community, which in turn makes our community a stronger, better place to live.
We are planning to formally kick-off our Campaign on Tuesday September 14th at the Chamber's Business-After-Hours at City Tile in downtown Murfreesboro. Thanks to Doug Young and the Chamber for giving such an ideal forum to announce our goal and recognize our pacesetter campaigns. We will also be asking other business leaders to consider running a campaign this year. This is a great year to get involved especially if you've never participated because we have such a great network of volunteers to assist companies in running a great initial campaign. It's only with the help of new committed leaders that we'll be able to meet more of our communities' needs. Please come to the Kick-off to hear more about what we're planning for this Campaign and how you can help. In the meantime, know that your United Way staff and a growing network of volunteers are working hard raise more money than ever before - all to enable our agencies to serve even more people in 2011.

2010 Campaign Kickoff |
The United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties will kick off its annual fundraising campaign at the September Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours on September 14th at City Tile.
United Way will announce the campaign's fundraising goal, recognize those companies and organizations which have volunteered to conduct early campaigns as "Pacesetter Campaigns," and identify this year's campaign leaders. The annual campaign, which occurs during the fall each year, has a goal of securing pledges from the community through workplace campaigns that benefit the local United Way's 44 partner agencies and programs. Last year's campaign had a goal of $2.8 million, and about $2.39 million in pledges was secured.
The event will be from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at 223 South Spring Street. The cost is $5 for Chamber of Commerce members and $10 for non-members.

Campaign Corner
Rutherford County Government and County Schools
Since 2005, Rutherford County Government and Schools have increased their campaign donations from less than $9,000 to now over $172,000. It takes team work from the executive committee down to each department. We have discovered over the years how significant it is to educate employees on the importance of giving to a local agency. We stress that money donated stays here locally for our families, friends and neighbors. This year we will be having our 3rd Annual On Line Auction. Anyone can make a bid on items such as a one night stay at the Front Porch Bed and Breakfast, a set of 4 tires from Bridgestone/Firestone, a wine picnic set, a full house inspection, and other items. We will have our 2nd Annual Chili Cook off on the Square on Oct. 29; the same night as Treat or Treat on the Square. This year we will have our local high schools participating, as well as our County Departments; a great way to have dinner that night. Do you have talent? We will be having a "Rutherford has Talent Show" to cap off our fund raising events.
Look for more details in the future for these events as well as others. Rutherford County employees need to be proud of their years of giving.
