August is already here - where has the summer gone?  I am not sure about you, but I am looking forward to the fall this year more than ever. Not just because we may get some relief from the heat, but the fall is also United Way's annual campaign time. Your United Way has been busy under the direction of our Campaign Chair, Pat Murphy, who has built a strong cabinet to lead your United Way to a successful campaign. We are getting great response from our business partners with our Loaned Executive program, which is designed to involve company employees serving as account managers for the United Way campaign. I am confident that this will be a great campaign year for United Way.

Your United Way staff has been busy this summer. We hosted our new signature event with the Red, White, and Blues, which consisted of a fun evening of food, music and crab races.  We also published our first annual report, received a "thumbs up" from United Way World Wide for completion of our membership requirements ahead of schedule, unveiled our new website and completed a new brochure and video. This staff has been focused on our professionalism and transparency to this community. We understand the need to provide services through our partner agencies while developing the trust of the community.

I must take just a minute to brag. Your United Way staff is made up of some of the most dedicated and hard-working individuals in the community. They are motivated by the end result, which is serving this community. I am so proud of the work and commitment that they each have made to your United Way. Also, let me add that our partner agencies are providing much-needed services. We saw so many people rally together during the flood. It was amazing to watch the agencies respond unselfishly and with the heart to help a neighbor. Thank you to all that gave their time and resources.

I would like to challenge everyone to take a page out of this disaster playbook - when we all do a little it impacts the whole. Are you giving time and resources personally, or do you have the ability to influence a company to run a campaign? Although we had a good campaign last year, we still did not meet all the needs requested. Please consider helping with your personal gift as well as your circle of influence. Thank you for all you do...
Lead the Way to Victory

Each year, a select group of high performance businesses take on the challenge to "jump start" the annual campaign by becoming a Pacesetter. These organizations set the standard for leadership and community support by locking in their increased campaign donations during the summer months. The success and excitement generated by the activities of our 2010 Pacesetters will help to inspire other organizations to follow their lead when running their own campaigns.

If your organization is ready to "set the pace" for the 2010 Campaign, please contact Carolyn Tumbleson at Carolyn.Tumbleson@uwrutherford.org.

Our current 2010 Pacesetters include:

FirstBank
Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce
Murfreesboro Electric Department
Wal-mart
Ingram Content Group
ClaimTrust
Site Engineering Consultants
UWRCC Partner Agencies

 A Note from Emerson Heating Products

At Emerson Heating Products, we believe in putting the "Fun" in Fundraising.  For our 2009 United Way Campaign we threw pies at our management team for a donation per pie, feasted during our soup/stew/Jambalaya cook-off and dessert bake off, had employees bring in baby pictures of themselves for a "Who's Who" guessing game, and we held a Change Challenge to see what department could bring in the most change for United Way. Our week long campaign has become something our employees look forward to every year (especially the pie throwing!). Through our yearly United Way campaign we are not only supporting our local community but also showing our employees appreciation for the hard work they do all year.

UWRCC School Supply Drive

Success by 6 Logo
Christmas is traditionally thought of as being financially difficult for parents, but all too often the start of new school year can be challenging as well. Teachers and schools request specific supplies (even brand specific), and it can be hard for parents to provide everything for their children. In addition to the financial strain, inadequate supplies may prove damaging on a child's self-esteem.

While there are United Way partner agencies, such as the Salvation Army, who offer free school supplies to families in need, Success By 6 is attempting to supplement those services through its initiatives within the community, as well as meet the needs of families who may be unaware of those services.

As a result, The United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties early childhood initiative program will be accepting school supplies and, or donations until August 18. The collected school supplies will then be given away to children and families present at the following upcoming community events:

July 31, 2010- Franklin Heights Back to School Jam
August 3, 2010- National Night Out @ Spring Valley Site & Rogers Park
August 21, 2010- City Schools Blast Back to School Event

In addition to school supplies, families will also receive information about other United Way partner agencies which can provide additional assistance.

Donations and, or supplies may be delivered to 615 Memorial Blvd. Suite 200 (FirstBank building), Murfreesboro, TN.  For more information, please contact Jennifer Smith at 615.893.7303.

United Way Worldwide 10 Year Goals for Education
United Way has put a stake in the ground on education.  Our goal is to cut the number of high school dropouts in half by 2018.  It's an ambitious goal.  This year, 1.2 million high school seniors will not graduate.  That means 6,000 students will drop out today.  The numbers are even grimmer for young people of color.

Every parent's dream is for our children to succeed - and for their success to surpass ours.  But today's young Americans are less likely to earn a diploma than their parents, a distinction not shared by any other industrialized country.
United Way wants to change that reality, and boost every child's chance for success in school, work and life.  Our core strengths - a national network, committed partners and public engagement capacity - position us well to activate this social change movement.

Our goal is to mobilize United Ways, our partners and individuals around the challenge to cut the high school dropout rate in half by 2018.  United Ways are the right galvanizers of work towards this goal because we bring three powerful drivers of social change to the education challenge:

  • A national network with demonstrated success in mobilizing communities to change lives;
  • A diverse array of partners who leverage our assets; and
  • A capacity to move communities to make a difference.

Much of the United Way system is already engaged in education work - especially early childhood education and increasing high school graduation rates. But our 10-year education goal cannot be achieved by focusing on high school alone, or by starting in the 9th grade or only doing early childhood work.  High school dropouts are 12 years in the making, usually starting school behind.  So tackling the education challenge requires reframing education on a birth to 21 continuum.  The five focus areas United Way works in are a way to organize the work and build strategies in light of the birth to 21 continuum.

United Way's model focuses on outcomes and goals for a community, and drawing on the strength of existing partnerships, relationships, and good ideas already underway.   Supportive communities, effective schools and strong families must be in place, supporting strategies and approaches rooted in research.  The results we're after mirror our five education focus areas:

  • Enter school ready to succeed
  • Read proficiently by 4th grade;
  • Make a successful transition to middle school;
  • Graduate from high school on time; and
  • Be ready for success in college, work and life

The The United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties' e-newsletter is distributed on the first Tuesday of each month.
