Youth CAN

Rutherford County MCHRA Youth CAN Program

"Our primary goal as professional and caring adults is to serve those young people who need extra help and motivation to achieve success in the workforce."-Youth CAN Staff

Youth CAN is a program of Mid-Cumberland Human Resource Agency in LWIA 9 and is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor and Workforce Development through NCAC as the agent of the Middle Tennessee Workforce Investment Board.  The program has been in operation in Rutherford County since June 2001 and assists students who are ages 16-21.  The goals of our Youth CAN include:

·         To provide or link eligible youth to the financial and educational help they need to receive a high school diploma, GED, or certificate.
·         To prepare youth for employment, occupational, and post-secondary educational opportunities
Our strategies are to provide those experiences that give them an image of themselves as potential full time employees in an occupation suited to their personal ambitions.  We are currently serving approximately 275 at-risk youth in the Rutherford County area.  Last summer, due to additional government funding, we were able to employ over 300 young people in a six-week summer employment program.

Applicants must first meet low-income guidelines and then any of the following criteria:

·         deficient in basic literacy skills
·         a school dropout
·         homeless or a runaway
·         a foster child or in state custody
·         pregnant or a parent
·         an offender
·         disabled
·         needing additional assistance to complete an educational program or to secure employment
For more information about our program you may contact any case manager at 615-217-6823.

2010 United Way Day of Action
3 Point Play
Volunteers from the 2009 Day of Action

The United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties will host its eighth annual Day of Action on Friday, May 21, 2010. During the United Way Day of Action, teams of volunteers from employers, schools, churches, and other organizations will perform community service projects for United Way's 45 partner agencies in Rutherford and Cannon counties. These projects may vary from landscaping to painting a room to delivering meals to those in need.

Upon submitting a Volunteer Registration Form, United Way will pair your volunteer team with a partner agency and its project based upon the number of volunteers on the team, any special skills or equipment that you would like to volunteer to use as noted on the Volunteer Registration Form, and the availability of the team during the day. Volunteer Registration Forms are due to United Way by Friday, April 23, 2010. Please visit http://www.uwrutherford.org/volunteer.html for a Volunteer Registration Form.
