CEO Corner

3 Point Play

It is now time to close the door on our 2009 Campaign. While we did not meet the goal of $2.8 million, we had a great fundraising season in a terrible economy. A "BIG" thank you to our community, campaign committee, and staff for a lot of hard work. I wish we had a way to measure the needs that are met through the campaign and educate the community on how we are doing through the campaign. Last year we were unable to fund $1.4 million of needs. This year it will be more. The balance scale to a bad economy vs. campaign funding unfortunately does not tip in our favor - the worse the economy, the greater the needs.

Your United Way is already working on the 2010 Campaign. Our message will continue to be "when everyone does a little we can impact the greater need".  $50 per house hold in Rutherford and Cannon County represents a $6 million campaign. That is less than a dollar a week and is a doable mission. The other thing we must accomplish is education to what United Way does. Many people are familiar with the United Way name, but are not sure what we do. Your United Way is a fund raising partner with 45 agencies and programs in this great community. We serve the community by taking on the fundraising to allow the agencies to concentrate on providing the services.

You give through United Way not to United Way. I have had several folks ask me why give to United Way. To be honest, the act of giving is what is critical. The United Way is a vehicle that allows many in our community that would possibly not give without the structure of a payroll deduction to give. We also provide accountability. Your United Way works with the partner agencies and over 90 volunteers to review the allocations request to ensure financial and outcomes integrity. All in all when you look at your United Way and understand what we do you will see your United Way,  Board of Directors , staff and partner agencies are very focused on accountability.

I hope you all will share in our mission to GIVE, ADVOCATE and VOLUNTEER....together we can Live United!

Volunteers from the 2009 Day of Action

The date for the 2010 United Way Day of Action has been set for Friday, May 21, 2010. On the Day of Action (formerly known as Day of Caring) teams of volunteers from employers, school, organizations and other groups across Rutherford and Cannon Counties will be working on a wide variety of projects through the United Way partner agencies.  Projects may include painting and landscaping, delivering meals, or aiding senior citizens in the community.

Contact Meagan Flippin to sign up as a volunteer/provide a team for the 2010 United Way Day of Action.

Allocations Update

United Way has just completed our annual orientation for new panel volunteers preparing them for our upcoming allocations process.  We are working with over 80 community volunteers to meet with our partnering agencies, learn about the services they provide, and gain a knowledge of their budget information as well as their financial needs for the 2010/2011 funding year.

After visiting with the agencies and reviewing their applications, they will attend the panel hearings held in May in order to determine how much of the allocable pool of funds will be designated to each agency.

Each volunteer seems excited about being a part of the allocations process and United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties is extremely honored to be surrounded by individuals who are willing to give up a portion of their very precious time in order to serve our community in such a great capacity.

United Way of Tennessee's Day on the Hill

TR

United Way staff recently met with Senator Jim Tracy at the United Way of Tennessee's Day on the Hill. The Day on the Hill allowed United Ways to show support for continued funding for voluntary pre-kindergarten across Tennessee. More than 150 United Way advocates attended, and the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties delegation had the opportunity to meet with its legislators one-on-one. During those meetings, UWRCC staff was able to deliver hand-made Valentines from pre-K students in the Murfreesboro City Schools system.

The The United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties' e-newsletter is distributed on the first Tuesday of each month.
