RCAAC

"A rose by any other name may smell as sweet." With apologies to William Shakespeare, we disagree! The Rutherford County Adult Activity Center is celebrating its 35th year of service to adults with mental retardation and WE NEED A NEW NAME!

When the Activity Center was founded in 1975, the program was just that-a place for adults with mental retardation to go in the daytime in order to keep busy and give their families an opportunity to work, run errands and get a break from responsibility. Our clientele was seen primarily as people who needed care and supervision and a safe place to spend their daytime hours.

We now understand that adults with mental retardation can

o Work in regular jobs and pay taxes

o   Live in regular homes in regular neighborhoods

o   Be good neighbors and friends

o   Give back to the community through volunteer work

o   Make decisions about where they live, work and socialize

The Adult Activity Center's mission is now to support our clients in living full lives and participating in and giving back to their home communities.  We are about

o   Job training and placement

o   Teaching life skills like cooking, shopping and budgeting

o   Residential services (20 homes in regular neighborhoods rented by our clients and with staff support as needed)

o   Volunteer work : Meals on Wheels, Food Bank, Lions Club, Rutherford County recycling program

WE NEED A NEW NAME TO REFLECT WHAT WE DO AND WHAT OUR CLIENTS CAN ACCOMPLISH. It should be

o   Upbeat and reflect the abilities and potential of our clientele

o   Possibly reflect our service to both Rutherford and Cannon Counties

o   Not contain such words as "handicapped" or "mental retardation."

If you have any ideas, please call Betty McNeely or Rachel Burch (890-4389) or email us at rcaac@bellsouth.net. The winning namer will receive recognition at our Anniversary Banquet and a $100 award.

Note: Periodically, a United Way partner agency name will be drawn to be featured as the Guest CEO of the month. If you are a partner agency and have not yet entered the drawing, contact Meagan Flippin.

UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN EXTENDED THROUGH VALENTINE'S DAY

The United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties has extended its annual fundraising campaign until February 14th. United Way's most recent weekly pledge thermometer shows that just over $2.1 million has been pledged, which is about 77 percent of the $2.8 million goal. The extension of the campaign is a result of the rising need due to the challenges of the current economy. In 2009, $1.4 million in requests from partner agencies went unmet due to lack of funding and that amount is expected to be higher this year. Your United Way is calling upon the community to help the organization help others.

There are several option for the community to contribute to the campaign in its final days. They include:

-joining the "Over the Top Club," which recognizes each new or additional $100 individual donation or more and $250 or more from companies, organizations and civic clubs. Over the Top Club members are recognized in a rolling list published weekly in The Daily News Journal through the end of February.

-becoming eligible for the "Chase the Cars" giveaway by pledging $300 (or $6.00 per week by payroll deduction). Such a gift qualifies an individual for a chance at a drawing to win a choice of one of two automobiles donated by the Alexander Automall.

For more information, please call (615) 893-7303 or visit www.uwrutherford.org. Donations may be made via the United Way website, by check to P.O. Box 330056, Murfreesboro, TN, 37133 or in person at 615 Memorial Blvd., Floor 2, Murfreesboro, TN, 37129.

The partners, volunteers, and Spring Valley/Rolling Acres residents received a belated Christmas present!  The KaBoom! playground build was recognized by Cable Channel 3 as one of the top five stories of 2009.  This project was a partnership between the Home Depot Foundation, the Academy of Country Music, LeAnn Rimes, KaBoom!, Spring Valley, and United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties.

PAs the Academy's Humanitarian of the Year, Ms. Rimes had the opportunity to work with KaBoom! to select the site for a playground built in her honor.  She chose Murfreesboro!  United Way served as the Project Manager for the build, mobilizing amazing volunteers that staffed 9 committees to plan and execute the project.  The committees were comprised of Spring Valley/Rolling Acres residents working alongside community members.

The City of Murfreesboro supported this project on every level.  Rob Lyons endorsed and participated in the build.  Chief Glenn Chrisman and the Murfreesboro Police Department provided security for volunteers, Chris Griffith and the Engineering Department worked diligently behind the scenes-in the rain and mud-- to remove unsafe playground equipment and prep the site for build day, Chris Shofner guided the PR process, Parks and Rec provided amazing activities for the children, and Channel 3 shared the story with our community.

P1

126 Home Depot employees volunteered on their day off alongside 129 community members...255 individuals transformed a neighborhood in one day!!!  In 8 hours, an often overlooked area of our community realized that they do matter, that people are willing to come into their neighborhood and work alongside of them, and that there are a tremendous amount of untapped resources that can make a difference in their lives.  Collectively reaching out a hand to one neighborhood, significantly influenced the condition of all of us.

MURFREESBORO'S DON WITHERSPOON NAMED TO UNITED WAY OF TN BOARD

United Ways of Tennessee (UWT), which provides member support services to 38 United Way organizations across the state, recently restructured its Board of Trustees to more accurately reflect the changing face of United Way supporters.

"We always need to be willing to adapt and grow. With the changes in our economy some may say 'now more than ever.' Our internal representative board decided it was time to make a change in how we assemble leadership to take United Ways into a new era," said UWT Board Chair Bryce Haugsdahl.

"With our new board structure, we gain valuable knowledge and insight from leaders across our state and within our communities," said Haugsdahl, Executive Vice President and C.O.O. of United Way of the Mid South in Memphis. "Simply put, we know it's important to have state leaders outside our own United Way organizations to more accurately reflect the ideas being formed in communities, our business partner organizations and other teams of supporters," Haugsdahl said.

Williamson County United Way President and UWT Nominating Committee Chair Ann Buchanan announced the new members. Executive Committee Officers include Chairman Bryce Haugsdahl; Past Chairman Rick Morrow; Chairman-Elect Alan Turner; Treasurer Gary Bowman; Secretary Wendy Peay; Nominating Committee Chair Ann Buchanan; and filling the newest post is At-Large Representative Mary Freeman, Director of the Tennessee Regulatory Authority.

Additional Board members include: Eric Dewey, President United Way of Metro Nashville; Dawn Holley, Director of United Way of Bedford County; Eva Dillard, President of United Way of Greater Chattanooga; Ben Landers, President of United Way of  Greater Knoxville; CeeGee McCord from Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport; Linda O'Neal, Director for the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth; Jimmy Stone, Deputy Director for Facilities and Operations for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory; Tim Webb, State Commissioner of the Department of Education; and Don Witherspoon, a retired executive from Pfizer Inc.

"Last year alone, United Way organizations across the state distributed nearly $100 million in funding to over 1,300 nonprofit agencies and programs," UWT President Mary Graham reports. "United Way is the driving force behind many initiatives that address the state's most critical needs including literacy programs, early childhood intervention programs, family resource centers, initiatives creating economic opportunity and more. Our work is impacting education, income and health across Tennessee every day," Graham said.

Success by 6 Logo

From Jennifer Smith and Rita Jones

Through partnerships in the Cannon County area, the December Success By 6 workshop brought a 60% increase in attendance! Cannon County SB6 support specialist, Rita Jones, worked hard to develop the workshop with Erin Nichols from TNCEP UT Extension, and Julie Gannon from Busy Kids Learning Center. The workshop sparked great interest with caregivers of young children with a topic on "Healthy Holidays". The turnout alone was great, but what was even more exciting was the question... "When will your next workshop be?"

Success By 6 is committed to keeping the families involved. Two workshops are planned for the month of February.  The first will take place at Busy Kids Learning Center on February 11th.  This is free and open to the public.  Rhonda Bartlett with Upper Cumberland Child Care Resource & Referral Center will discuss "Building Family Involvement".  The second workshop is by invitation and is committed to serving the families of domestic violence.  Lisa Baird, project director with SAVE, and Bill Taylor's Bushido School of Karate are working with Success By 6 to present "Child Safety Information".  The goal of this workshop is to educate the children on "Stranger Danger" and to discuss with the parents the importance of up-to-date Child ID's. Child ID kits will be provided to the parents for each child, and the adults will have time for question and answers with Bill, to discuss "Known Assailant Attacks".

Success By 6 works to provide education and support to families with young children, ages birth to 6, with a goal of promoting healthy development and kindergarten readiness.

Your Success By 6 is working hard to open doors for United Way in Cannon County. Thank you for your continued support in Community Initiatives as we continue to LIVE UNITED and influence the condition of others.
