Greetings!
|

A special note of thanks to everyone whose donations during the Fall Annual Appeal and beyond are helping the Friendship Center to care for families and individuals in need in our community. Financial and in-kind contributions, both large and small, throughout the year and during the holidays make it possible for us to respond in ways that bring healing, comfort and hope. In short, our work together "makes love visible." Thank you again for your continued support!

Friends celebrated at annual meeting |
South Congregational Church of New Britain received the "Faith Community of the Year" award at the Friendship Center's Annual Meeting on Tuesday, January 26, at Angelico's Restaurant. Accepting the award from Executive Director Ellen Perkins Simpson (at right) are three South Church ministers, past and present. From left: The Rev. Ron Brown, former senior pastor; The Rev. Hugh Penney, past senior minister; Simpson; and The Rev. George Harris, current senior minister. Members of South Congregational Church joined Friendship Center residents for a joint Christmas Eve service this year, and hosted a Christmas Day dinner for the entire New Britain community. South Church also invited the whole community to participate in a memorial service to celebrate the lives of homeless individuals who died during the past year.
The "Business of the Year" award was presented to Aetna, Inc., National Accounts Plan Sponsor Services. Accepting the award from Simpson (r) are Mary Ann West (left) and Monica Bird. National Accounts Plan Sponsor Services was recognized for its "Casual for a Cause" program in which employees pay to dress "down." The funds raised help to support a "Bookbag Project" which provides new bookbags filled with school supplies for children associated with the Friendship Service Center.
Congratulations and our appreciation to South Church and Aetna.

The littlest resident
|
It's a GI RL! For the first time in the Friendship Center's 41-year history, on Thursday, January 21, 2010, a beautiful baby girl was born into one of the families in residence. Both mother and daughter are doing well, and staff are working with the mom to realize her dream of affording her own apartment. In the meantime, the Friendship Center community couldn't be more delighted with its newest, littlest and sweetest resident!

Scenes from the holiday just past...

Mabel
Yeterian, Board Secretary, (right) pitches in with members of the "Friends of
the Friendship Center" at their annual "Santa's Workshop," where
hundreds of donated items for residents at the Friendship Center are
beautifully wrapped in holiday style.

Staff
and volunteers (from left) Carol Duffy, Jessica Sainz, Ashley Taplin and Irene Belanger pack the wrapped gifts into Santa sacks marked with the names
of shelter residents. These gifts of love provided by donors throughout the
community greeted residents on Christmas morning.
